So. Is this bad news for doughnut-holers who were hoping to barely afford NU? Will they likely be priced out due to these changes? Or, status quo?
International Students being used as money trees? You’ve got to be kidding me.
For every impoverished genius who comes here because he or she can’t get a decent university education at home, there are 10 wealthy students (children of oligarchs- we’re talking serious money) trying to get an American university education as a hedge. First a student visa- then an LPT, then the OPT, then the Green card. You’ve got significant wealth at home- but your country is unstable? Mom and Dad buy a condo near your college; first comes the condo, next it’s a luxury home in Miami or NY.
I’m the child of refugees and I love a good bootstrap story as much as the next person. But you have seriously drunk the kool aid if you don’t realize that full price American universities are the bargain of the century for wealthy families overseas. Why shouldn’t wealthy foreigners pay full price? Why should we be subsidizing someone who has extreme wealth?
Even back in the 1970’s (the dark ages) when I was in college, there were a few dozen international students lurking around campus. At the time- it was Saudi oil families. They drove Mercedes, one had his own bodyguard, they spent every weekend at hotels in Boston or NY partying.
I was a lowly scholarship student- you seriously think those kids should have been getting discounted tuition? In what world does that make sense??? I was happy they were there to help the college balance the budget- it’s not like they paid MORE than tuition (although they could well afford it).
@blossom Because NU is a private university. In the same breath, do you believe they should refuse aid for undocumented immigrants? I don’t think they deserve discounts, but I know international students at NU whose families sacrificed everything for their child to get a good education.
I also don’t believe that wealthy students should be used to subsidize poor students. College should not be this expensive.
As with any other student…NO ONE needs to attend a $60,000 a year plus college. The vast majority of these students had less expensive choices in their home country,
Repeat…NO ONE is required to attend a $60,000 a year plus college…no one. That is a choice.
And the new financial aid policies at NU are not changing this one bit. Families with higher incomes and assets will still receive far less aid than families with less in me and assets.
Oh…and for other schools…lets talk UCLA or Ohio State for example…these places charge more than double for out of state students. OOS students are a good income generator for these schools…again…choices choices…these students COULD attend college in their own states for a fraction of the cost.
<<<’
$20,000 income: $4,935 (including $2,500 student work)
$60,000 income: $9,735 (including $2,500 student work)
<<,
If I’m understanding this correctly, and maybe I’m not, saying that those with $60k incomes or less will not have loans pkged in their FA pkgs…BUT…the remaining cost is high enough that likely the low/lowish income student will have to accept a loan to cover their net cost minus WS.
A $20k income family likely cant pay 2500 net cost because that’s 200 a month that they don’t have left over each month. So, the student will either need to earn that during the summer or take a loan to cover.
A $60k income family is also not likely going to be able to pay $7k per year (net after WS), so those students will likely also be taking out loans to cover some/most/all of the family contribution.
Does that net cost include personal exoenses which are more under student control…and don’t all happen at once? If so…that work study or other job could pay for this part of the college expenses.
An international student whose family sacrificed everything to attend NU (or anywhere else in the US) has made a choice. Do I believe that an engineer with a degree from an ABET accredited university has better professional options long term than attending a poorly funded institution in his or her own country? Highly likely. Does that mean that a university in the US should ASSUME that all international applicants are poor- no, this isn’t accurate, and does that mean that a US university should automatically discount their tuition because they’ve got wretched options at home? No, this isn’t accurate either.
Terrific universities in Singapore, China, Korea, all of western Europe, some in the Middle East. Are there rational reasons why a family might decide that a US degree is preferable? of course. Check out the backlog of student visa applications to see how and why. But most of these families are far from indigent. And for many of them- particularly the extremely wealthy-we’re talking billionaires here- having a kid get a student visa is the first step in a very well thought out strategy of income and security diversification. Your country might socialize the banks next year, or seize some of the oil fields or diamond mines or natural gas reserves? Better to have a kid firmly planted in Chicago or Boston or pretty much ANYWHERE.
I think last year it was revealed that the shell corporation which purchased one of the most expensive apartments every sold in NYC was actually bought for an NYU college student- the daughter of one of the wealthiest families in Russia. You want that family getting a tuition discount with their teenager living in a palatial apartment???
Re #24
Yes, the current NPC indicates that no loans are packaged in those situations. But students and parents certainly can distribute the net price differently between parent contribution, student work, and student loan, so some such students may take loans and/or try to work more hours to cover gaps from parent contributions lower than what the school assumes.
D1 did not apply to Northwestern because it looked out of reach after running the NPC. I’d love for it to be in the mix for D2. I’m looking forward to seeing how this will play out.
Looks like NPC on website is updated. My EFC is about 10k lower; I think I know where I’m applying ED next year!!
^^ woohooo!!!
