Hey I’m also applying to Northwestern and I just have a few questions about my application. Do you think it’s harmful that I am applying to transfer as a Junior? Do they consider the level of competition at your current institution? How weighted are extracurricular activities? Please let me know anyone!
@finalsarefun12 your stats are really good! on the NU transfer website, it says applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so I am guessing anywhere between April and June… not totally sure though

Recommendation should be good. Are SAT and EC my disadvantages?
Echo17,
The biggest thing for transfers which they look at is essays, grades and test scores, transferable credits, Followed by Legacy, EC, and other minor stuff. I believe that everything is important. Good luck
@Finalsarefun12 your GPA and ECs are in the ballpark. Double legacy helps too…(did your parents give back to NU?) Are you awaiting for retaken ACT/SAT results…? Thats the biggest obstacle you have from what I see
@ivyleaguefan Sadly my GPA in high school and my ACT were fairly low compared to other students applying as a transfer to Northwestern. They have given back to Northwestern.
Hey guys, just applied to McCormick School of Engineering. Was waitlisted last year, but still interested in attending my dream school. Looking for some feedback on my stats in terms of acceptance chances! Best of luck to all!
School: Top 35 state school, honors program
Major: Chemical engineering and environmental chemistry, minor in math
Year: Freshman
College GPA: 3.88, ending this semester with 71 credits (35 from AP)
Rec letter is probably good, but nothing spectacular. Essays turned out pretty well
EC’s:
Two research positions, one in a polymer/alternative energy group and one in an organic chemistry lab (took orgo as a freshman and got an A, which is how I got hired. Hopefully they’ll appreciate that)
Board member for Engineering Governing Council and Engineers Without Borders
Employed by university as a tutor for first year engineering classes (gen chem, physics, calc, etc)
Member of ChemE Car team, which creates and races miniature cars that run off chemical clock reactions
-Leading a Governor’s School project at the university this summer (Governor’s School is an honors science/engineering program for high school students. Most of the people who teach there are undergrad engineering majors)
-Dean’s List
High School GPA: 4.59 weighted (valedictorian had a 4.73)
SAT: 2280
APs: six 5s, three 4s, one 3
President of two honor societies, region and all-state band, Eagle Scout, religious and volunteer work, etc
@rltransfer your stats look really good, your definitely competitive for admission. However McCormick is generally the hardest school at NU to get into. Your background in chem seems like it should help you standout. I don’t see any apparent weaknesses from the information you’ve listed, my only advice would be to try to show as much interest to NU as many ways as you can. Good luck!
Hey I just submitted my app last night! When will northwestern email me to confirm they have all of my materials? Also, here’s some stats:
Junior college, freshman
3.77 GPA (1 B last semester, all A’s on midterm)
Honors program
Dean’s list
Psych and English major
Worked as writing consultant
Intern for state rep. Leitch and rec from him
Intramural vb captain
Phi theta kappa
Lots of volunteering variety
Other minor e.c.
3 great teacher recs
ACT: 29
HS GPA: 4.0 weighted
@kiekers Are you toward the top of your class at your junior college? At my local community college, most kids seem to get straight As, so your GPA seems a little low, but your classes could be much harder than the ones offered near me. Your other weakness is your ACT, which is below average for NU. But your list of ECs is really impressive and your strong rec letters can carry a lot of weight, so I’d say there’s a chance!
Submitting my application to McCormick School of Engineering today.
Rising sophomore with 57 semester credits by the start of next fall.
Was waitlisted last year. Will almost definitely attend if admitted.
Good luck to everyone!
Just applied as well to McCormick, I took 2 years off after high school to get my shit together.
School: local community college
Major: Pre-engineering major
Year: Freshman
College GPA: 4.0, will have finished 45 credits after this semester. (23 first semester, 22 this semster)
Recommendation letter from professor is good, advisor wrote a stellar recommendation, since not too many students at my school have a 4.0 with similar classes.
EC’s:
Vice president of the physics and engineering club
Phi theta kappa
Volunteer with local community organization
I have 2 semesters of research at the top clinic in the US.
Rugby club
amateur weightlifting competitor
-Dean’s List
High School GPA: 2.9 gpa
SAT: 2190 (650 w, 800 m, 740 cr)
Research at top clinic
Varsity swimming for 4 years
Transfer admissions are basically a gamble, so lets see. My high school record will drag me down, but I graduated in 2012, so hopefully that will have some weight.
