Northwestern Transfer Credits Qs

So... I have a bunch of questions on Northwestern credit policy and other stuff and I wanted to get general feel of how other people did in their evaluations too.
1) First things first. In the new student week website, it seems like that they ask freshmen to take placement tests online. As transfers, should we do it too? And btw if anyone has the general ed requirements for WCAS, I'd really appreciate it.

2) Coming in as sophomore transfer, I took 16 and 14 credits respectively at my former school. They "accepted" all my credits except it looks really skewed since they're on quarters. They awarded me 11 quarters out of 12, is this decent or should I fight for one more general credit? And is NU generally good with negotiating credit evaluations? They definitely screwed over some of my courses giving me a religion tradition credit for an intro to geography that I took 1st semester.

3) On my "Internal GPA" section, there's an N/A. Does that mean NU will just give me credits but not honor the GPA that I received from my previous school?

4) Did anyone get back-credits? I placed out of French 1,2,3 at my former school and went straight to French 4 but Mizzou gave me credits for those courses. NU didn't give me anything for them... Same goes for my chemistry so I'm wondering if they just give you credit for what you have actually taken.

5) What is NU's limitations on the maximum number of APs that they will accept? I'm not bringing in a ton but I'm just wondering.

And one last question about housing. I sent them an e-mail today saying I reeeaaaaallllly want Foster Walker Complex for my assignment. Is this basically a futile effort when they're going to put me on transfer housing anyway?

i'm transferring this yr too! hope this helps!

1- transfers need to take the placement tests, too. the online course catalog should have all the gen requirements

2- i'm going to be a sophomore as well, and i had had 18 credits for each of my first 2 semesters and got 12 quarter credits....so i'm thinking 11 should be about right

3-credits may transfer, but GPAs will not. however, if you intend on going to grad school, they will look at the GPA of all attended colleges

4- i did the exact same thing you did with french placement at my old school. NU only gives credit for classes that you have actually taken, though. i recently took the french placement test and was notified that same day of how i did.

5-i think they will take all credit for APs on which you scored a 4 or 5....theres some info about them in the newstudentweek site... i think theres a link somewhere in the placement exams section

housing- we should find out this week...all you could've done is put foster-walker as your first choice on the housing application. the only official "transfer" housing its the transfer house, btw. chances are, if you didn't put that on your online app, you won't get it.

Hey alykat, I noticed that your location is Louisiana. Can I ask what school you're transferring from?

how much financial aid did you guys get?

About $4500 in NU Scholarship which is probably the only thing that I'll accept. It's really sad.

green09, no grants?

It says
$4200 NU Scholarship
$3000 Federal Perkins Loan
$2700 Fedl Sub Stafford Loan
$2200 Federal Work Study

I guess not. How'd you do?

oh, i'm thinking about applying for next fall and was wondering what financial aid was like. thanks!

gatoca- i'm transfering from a school called mcneese state university.its in southwest la

I will be trnasferring to NU this coming quarter as well. About the financial aid, let me just say that they seem to truly want to find a way to make it affordable to those who are admitted. They considered all of my circumstances and I would not be able to afford it without their understanding.

Concerning transfer credits, I registered a couple of weeks ago with Dean Weimer at WCAS. He explained the process as follows: First, they look at completed classes as a percentage of entire degree at your old school. For example, if you completed 30 semester hours on a degree plan of 120 hours, they would determine that you had completed 25% of your degree. They would then award 25% toward NU's degree. If your degree plan at NU calls for 45 quarter hours, that works out to 11.25 transfer credits rounded down to 11. They then try to examine classes taken and match them with a similar class at NU. If a close match is found, they give you credit for that class. If after the course evaluation, only 8 matches are found out of the 11, then 3 Gen Ed credits are posted to the transcript which can only count toward electives.

No credits are awarded for anything other than actual classes taken and AP's.

Hope that clears things up for some of you. Look forward to seeing you next month.

Tuckerdog's comment was completely inaccurate in regards to my financial aid situation. NU basically told us to sell our home and find money in our business, and despite the fact that I went into their financial aid office BAWLING....telling them that I wouldn't be able to attend if I didn't get money, the financial aid officer had the balls to tell me: "You better see if you can still get that financial aid at SMU."

dude i'm really sorry dontcareforthis. But you're still attending right?
Anyway, did anyone have a successful appeal with the financial aid dept? Mine's still getting reviewed...

Yeah, I'm still going to go. Supposedly they turn loans into scholarships if you get a good GPA your first year. My appeal took about 3 business days. Good luck!...but I'd def. be applying to some student loans in the meantime. lol
