Northwestern University chances?

Hey, everyone! I'm a high school junior and I'm looking to go to NYU, Carnegie Mellon, or Northwestern for a double major in musical theatre and social work/psychology. One of these three would be a dream come true, and I'd also flip at the chance to go to Syracuse. I'm gonna apply to Ithaca and Marymount Manhattan and Montclair State just to be safe, but my ideal schools would be one of the top four mentioned. So, given my potential application, what are my chances?

Also, assume that I get into the musical theatre program (a different battle altogether!)

SAT: 2060
CR 690
M 630
W 740
(I do plan on retaking the SATs in October before I submit my applications, any tips on improving my scores, particularly in math and possibly CR? How high should they be?)

I haven't taken the ACT yet or any SAT subject tests or anything like that. I plan on it, though.

GPA Weighted: 4.0
GPA Unweighted: 3.9
(These figures are estimates.)

Class Rank: I haven't received it yet, but I would guess somewhere in the top 10-15%.

Honors Courses:
Freshman year - English, global history, Spanish 2
Sophomore year - English, algebra 2, Spanish 3, US history 1
Junior year - US history 2
Senior year - None

IB Courses:

Senior year - English 2, Spanish 2, Psych

AP Courses:

Syracuse University (SUPA) Courses:

Jobs: Aeropostale sales associate (+ Aero Ambassador, which is an extra leadership position-type thing) May 2013-present

Sophomore year - Class president

Thank you so much!

FWIW, NU rejected several thousand kids with SATs of 2300 or higher this year. My daughter somehow got in with a 2200, but there was a lot of luck involved, I think.

Hey Peg!!

A word on “chance me” threads. NO ONE HERE KNOWS. You can read them, believe them, don’t believe them, drive yourself crazy, etc. but at the end of the day, NO ONE HERE KNOWS.

That being said – you can, perhaps get some idea by looking at the accepted student thread in this forum from last year. Look at the numbers of students who were accepted, and those of the ones rejected (though to be honest, you’ll see less of a difference than one might expect). Secondly, for most schools, google “NAME OF SCHOOL” and “COMMON DATA SET”. You can get the admissions profile – i.e., what were the numbers 25th Percentile, 50th Percentile and 75th Percentile for the enterring class. If your numbers are in this range, then you at least meet the profile that NU admits. However, given the low admissions percentage, all this really says is whether you have a reasonable shot or not.

Your case, honestly, you don’t have enough hard numbers to even hazard a guess. Perhaps when you know your final SAT/ACT numbers and have a better handle on your class rank and GPA.

Tougis, they also accept many with lower SATs (meaning 2100+) so 2200 isn’t some super low amount for NU. I’m not saying that a lower SAT is GOOD, but it’s not like 90% of the students got that high.

Zephyr is completely right. Especially at NU which is a top school that’s fairly holistic, no one will ever predict acceptance very well. The only way to predict would be if you had hooks, and great stats. If you were a URM, legacy student applying ED with a 4.0 unweighted and a 2350 then sure, we’d probably guess you’d get in. Otherwise, there really is no way to know.

An application for musical theater involves all sorts of factors that are outside of the norm … and outside of the common data set.
However, if you were you apply to Weinberg for A&S, let’s say that your application would not be at the higher end of the applicant pool. What i don’t know is how the “talent” factor might be evaluated and whether/how much it would affect your chances of admission to the musical theater program.
Good luck.

PP,
If you are interested in musical theatre, remember that for NU you are applying as a theatre major to the School of Communication. You could then choose to double major in the Weinberg School of Arts & Sciences. You must be accepted into the incoming class of about 100 students into the theatre major, and then eventually you will audition to get into the much smaller musical theatre section. As a previous poster said, applying as a theatre major is a different sort of animal. You do need high stats to get into NU, but they don’t necessarily have to be outrageously high, but you also have to show a genuine interest and some accomplishment in theatre.
