Northwestern University Early Decision thread 2010

MomCares, if the package is all loans, does it mean the EFC exceed the total cost of attendance?

but isnt a FA pkg for the student? It is money to cover the COA for the student. Yes, it assumes that the family / student comes up with the EFC first however they can. THEN the rest is what the FA pkg covers.

On EFC, realize that it is EFC calculated from an Institutional Methodology - meaning that NU can make up an EFC number, an estimated family contribution, that it determines using its own formulas and assumptions of how the family will make its contribution.

I was told by FAO that the link I provided above yields an EFC that is pretty close to the EFC that NU uses. Make sure IM is selected as the methodology.

Yes, according to NU’s calculations, though NOT according to the calculations of the financial consultant we’d worked with before applying ED. BIG discrepancy there, btw.

Oh well, it’s only money and I’m gong to chose to think we’re helping fund Destroyer’s future career as a stand-up comedian and NOT that big football stadium. ;-D

First - if you are not happy with or are in disagreement with your FA - call the FA office and ask them specifically how they came to your number. It may be wrong.

EFC - whether institutional or Federal, is paid by the Family (regardless if it is paid by cash or a parent plus loan). EFC is not part of the FA package - it is the Estimated Family Contribution.

Student then, depending on income of family, may qualify for Perkins Loans (extremely needy) and subsidized Stafford Loans.

Other students, who may get smaller grants, may also be offered unsubsidized Stafford Loans. Students not getting any FA still can get unsubsidized stafford loans.

NONE of the Unsubsidized Loans are considered in the 20,000 cap. Only Perkins Loans and Subsidized Loans are capped at 20,000 total.

If the Cost of Attendance at the School is 56,000 and your EFC is determined to be 60,000 - then you do not qualify at all for FA. You will be offered Unsubsidized Stafford Loans and told to pay the rest. How you pay for your EFC is up to you.

Example:

Student EFC = 15,000

COA = 56,000
EFC = 15,000 (paid by family)
Perkins = 2,500 (in students name)
Sub Stafford = 3,500 (in students name)
Work Study = 2,000 (for student to do)
Grant = 33,000 (does not have to be paid back)

Hmm has anyone that applied for financial aid not receive their info yet?

I haven’t either, but my CAESAR account tells me to contact undergrad financial aid. Check yours, they might have questions about your profile.

^^ yep, I got the same thing. Did you contact their office already and do you know if their financial aid office is working next week? Thanks

I sent them an email earlier today. I’m not sure if they are working - I tried to call before five and just got a message listing office hours, but perhaps I would have anyway? Possibly they got done early today and won’t be back next week. I hope they are though, I’m impatiant to get my FA so I can withdraw my applications from Princeton and MIT.

I found out I got in today! For some reason I did not receive the email, and Northwestern sent my decision to my boarding school address instead of my house so I still don’t have it… but I found out when I got my financial aid package in the mail today! My parents like it so I’m happy.

Class of 2015!!!

Oh goodness. I can´t believe I missed this thread! My dominance, she´s waning!
Oh. And. I see youuuuu Becca!

Does anyone else who was admitted ED feel out-of-sync with your peers at school? I think this has been an issue for our D.

She couldn’t fully celebrate her acceptance, as it upset some of her friends who were just starting their process, she couldn’t totally commiserate with folks struggling to meet application deadlines, she’s not traveling to auditions with friends from around the country, and she’s not on pins-and-needles waiting to see where she’ll land. She IS struggling with advanced senioritis (though I think that’s settling down by now) far sooner than any of her peers.

Anyone else having these out-of-phase issues?

Also - I’d heard there might be some sort of family event on campus in April sometime. Does anyone know anything about that? D is eager to go back for a visit now that she knows NU will be home.

“Anyone else having these out-of-phase issues?”

Yep. D is the only one of her really close friends who got in anywhere EA or ED, so although she is very happy and vocal about it at home, she whispers about it at school. She did, however, let me buy her the logo sweatshirt and even wears it sometimes. But, she deliberately avoids discussing it.

BTW. It was MIT that she got into. But, she is still waiting for the Northwestern decision (and others) before she makes her final decision on where to attend.

Congrats on D’s EA! I was also accepted to MIT (100 years ago), though I never attended.

D has a friend who got EA to Yale, but she’s on the other side of the country (and is still hoping to come to NU if accepted as it’s stronger UG than Yale in their field) plus an athlete at her school got EA to Princeton but she’s not close to him, so neither of those really give her a friend to celebrate with.

Funny story… D also wears her logo sweatshirt to school, but as it turns out there’s a “Northwest University” and a “Western” state university near to us, plus the NU colors resemble our big state school, so everyone thinks she’s going to one of those schools – none of which are in NU’s league. D has friends around the country who know what an amazing school NU is in their chosen field, but she can’t yet celebrate with any of them yet as they’ve all applied RD.

Ah well, I guess they’ll all be able to celebrate together by when… April?

Hi guys, just thought I’d pop back over to this thread for a visit. My daughter and her boyfriend did both get in to the University of Michigan so they are happy. Hope all of you lucky enough to get into Northwestern will have a wonderful time there!

@jorabamama – SO glad to hear they both landed in the same fantastic place!! D loved UMich last summer… and they are so lucky to get to live in Ann Arbor!!
