Northwestern Visit Reports

Oh that’s perfect weather. It’s 50 degrees now here in Texas and I love it.
I too am going to Northwestern’s Wildcat Day, on the 20th. I already toured the school last March and I’m really excited to be seeing the campus again and talking to professors from the Medill School of Journalism.
Any Medill students here? I really want to know about the program, what the classes are like, what the professors are like - anything!

I visited Northwestern in July and was very impressed by the campus and the people I met there. I attended a very professional and informative presentation at the undergraduate admissions office and then toured the campus with an exceptionally enthusiastic and knowledgable student tour guide (who happened to be in the School of Communication, which is my area of interest.) The visit moved Northwestern to the top of my list of schools. Just this past week the Toronto Northwestern Alumni Association invited a friend and I to “Northwestern Day” at the Royal Ontario Museum to view the Museum’s current Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit – I was very impressed that the alumni ties are so strong and that the school would keep in touch like this. I am applying regular admission, but NU is definitely now my top pick.

I loved the campus. Most beautiful I have seen by far.

I visited back in October and was quickly convinced to apply Early Decision. I loved the campus for a couple of reasons. Chief among them was the area of Evanston. It’s a bit of a distance from the city, which I find quite nice. Evanston has more to it that I had previously known; there are many shops and restaurants right by campus. It allows for students to not have to always be in the city, but still allows them to use it as a resource.

The campus itself was beautiful and my guide (a student in Medill, where I hope to attend next year) was helpful and very enthusiastic about Northwestern.

I finally went to visit Evanston a few weeks ago and had an amazing time. I went to the info session and then did the tour with a really kind tour guide. One of my friends knows a student at NU who gave me and my mom another little tour of the university. We even ran into a Chi Psi brother who showed us around the Lodge! (Because I have a brother at Michigan in Chi Psi.) I was in awe of NU the entire time. I absolutely love the feel of Evanston and I thought the campus was perfectly sized and extremely beautiful. I felt right at home among the student body and could definitely picture myself there. I could go on and on about everything I liked, but I don’t want to make an obnoxiously long post! (Even though this is already pretty long!)

Unfortunately, I am only a junior and have a year until I apply, but at least now I’m really motivated to work my hardest this year! I know it’s early and I still have other schools to see but I don’t really think any of the other schools on my list are quite as great as NU. I’ll still keep an open mind of course, but for now, I’ll choose to be an aspiring Wildcat. :)

i know its a dumb question… but does northwestern have a beach or a lake going through it? ( somewhere it said that its on the lakefront , while another site said its a beach)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_michigan

I toured there a few weeks ago. The campus is amazing. I love the suburban setting but yet still having the ability to be in downtown chicago within moments. The information session was very helpful and gave me a lot of information that i might have missed on the website? I was very disappointed that i did not get to see a dorm. Also, even though the campus is beautiful, walking from building to building just made me think of having to walk in the snow all the time. I’m from wisconsin so I know how to put up with the snow, however, i was hoping to get further away from it not closer to it. But besides that i absolutely loved it there.

I am thinking about doing one of the spending the night there tours. has anyone done that? feed back?

I visited Northwestern’s campus in October, and I have to say it was probably the most beautiful college campus I have ever been on. My tour guide was amazing, the weather was amazing, and along with the gorgeous sight-seeing on campus it was a perfect day. The campus seems to be quite smaller than it actually is, in my opinion, and I found it easy to find my way around. With the town of Evanston just a simple 2 minute walk away it is a great university with a big city feel, but surrounded by a smaller suburb. The scenery around campus is breath taking and with Lake Michigan basically at your feet it makes the experience even more surreal. I thought Northwestern was my top choice, just because of its great programs, but after I visited I knew it was the place for me.

Visited in January. Here are my opinions.

Pros:
Scenery
Spacious but not too large, the campus is smaller than I thought
Classes were small
Tour guide was enthusiastic but kind of overly so
Students seemed pretty attentive in class
whole foods is nearby…
the food in the dining halls looked yummy!

Cons:
When I visited the dining hall, everyone was sitting alone in front of their laptop…wasn’t much socializing going on…
The weather! socold…
Evanston is really small…not much to see…
i was surprised about how few seniors lived on campus…definitely a negative
another thing was the racial segregation that i observed on campus…groups of friends of the same color walking together…

I agree with drewski, that you have to keep an open mind when you visit. For example, I’m a city girl but Ithaca was stunning. At averby, that is kind of bizarre. I did not observe any “racial segregation.” I did overhear some students talking about their research projects which I thought was pretty interesting.

Anyway, My family and I visited Northwestern and University of Chicago over my Spring Break when we went to a family gathering in Chicago. (I would talk about UChicago too but it’s the wrong forum)

First of all, the campus is beautiful. Our tour guide was amazing and she was in HPME program which I was interested in and introduced me to the residential college system. The campus is gorgeous and well kept. Coming from the Northeast, the cold wasn’t a big problem for me at all. I didn’t see many students that day because according to the tour guide, students were in class and it was still early.

Evanston is a great college town even though it’s on the smaller side. On my list of best college towns, it would be third. Right under Ithaca and Ann Arbor. When I got on the train stop, it reminded me of New York City, with all the people waiting on the train and the sounds and noise of an urban life. Outside of Evanston were these beautiful houses. It reminded me of the homes in Staten Island, where we live.

What I really liked about Northwestern was its diversity. There are the intellectual types, the sleep in the library types, the party all day types, the quirky theater types (like me) and all the kinds of pre-professional students (law, medicine, etc).

Even though the presentation by the admission officer in the beginning was boring( she relayed all the basic information), our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the different classes at Northwestern and information on sororities.

Northwestern would definitely be a top choice for me if it wasn’t that far away from home.

emilly - just so you know - there are at least 3 flights an hour between O’Hare and LaGuardia and the flight is about 2 - 2 1/2 hours, so it’s not really that far. You might fly in and out of Newark being from SI but I’m sure there’s even more flight options then. By contrast, Ithaca is about 4 1/2 hours by car.
