I've been accepted to both the Georgetown School of Foreign Service and Northwestern's College of Arts and Sciences (I would major in international studies). Any views on which one is preferable?

I think that you should make a list of the pros and cons of each school and then decide.

For Foreign Service/International relations, I believe the nod would likely go to Georgetown. Overall academically and reputation wise - I think the nod goes to NU.

You may wish to also consider where you think you may be job hunting after graduation - if you see yourself in DC, then the networks at Georgetown would likely be more helpful. If you see yourself in Chicago or elsewhere, then NU networks might provide the best advantage.

Money being the same, I would be heading to Evanston, IL - YMMV.

so does Northwestern have a better reputation/name recognition overall?

Name recognition… I dont know… havent seen any marketing surveys. This would also depend upon whether you are referring to joe plumber, potential employer, or academia. With your poential employer or academia, they are going to both be very well known, admired, and impressive.

In terms of overall reputation, I think the nod goes to NU. Basically the USNWR rankings (perhaps flawed but most comprehensive measure available) are measuring some objective stats (selectivity, tearcher ratios, sat scores, etc) as well as the schools reputation amongst it’s peers. With NU at #12 overall in the country, and Georgetown at #21, I think the nod goes to NU.

They’re both great schools. I think that you should decide which school to go to based on fit as opposed to choosing the school that’s highest on the USNWR list.
