The scoop: admitted to the journalism schools at both Northwestern University and the University of Maryland, College Park. Want to also major in history or international relations.

Why Maryland would rock:

In-state tuition! Parents willing to foot the entire bill as well as help me out financially post-graduation while I hunt for the best job/apartment/possibly apply for grad school.

Why Northwestern would rock:

Would the superior education better arm me to be a ****ing awesome journalist?

Would coming out of Medill give me better job opportunities?

The only (hah) downside: 40K+ a year!

Congratulations on your acceptances!!! I can't pretend to know if graduating from one vs. the other would give you better opportunities. UMD has a great journalism program, though. If you are planning to go to grad school, I think saving your money and going to UMD for undergrad would be the best move. $40K+ times 4 yrs is a heck of a lot of money.

lol I just received some questions from a friend of mine asking the similar things. Got accepted to both Northwestern and UMD Gemstone for journalism. Visited Northwestern and said everything is purple ... kinda dull. So she decided to go to UMD.

My son got accepted at UMD Journalism and American U's School of Communications and he's torn. MD has the better reputation, but when I compared the quality of faculty, I was amazed at the high caliber of both. He really likes how politically involved and aware the AU students. Plus he loves living in DC. On the other hand, MD offers the big school experience and it's not that far from DC. He's been accepted into the Honors Program of both. (He's also been accepted into the Honors Program and Journalism/Communications schools at Temple, GWU, Fordham and University of Scranton.
