Im a junior and I really want to get into NU early decision but I feel like I have no chance. Can someone who got in( or in general) chance me please? My ACT score is a 34 with writing and my unweighted gpa is a 3.5 ( IK its not great). I have been taking all honors and AP classes at my high school and I also had a problem sophomore year which made me miss 3 weeks of school, which caused my grades to drop and I got 3 Cs sophomore year. I got my teachers and counselors to explain the sudden drop in their rec letters. I took the SAT math 2 subject test and got a 790 and the Chemistry subject test score was a 780. I have also been in research since freshmen year and I have been teamed up with NU undergraduates and worked at the university for all 3 years and did research with undergrads and thats how I fell in love with the university. I also have leadership positions I am a rep on the school board fro my high school, Relay for life executive, Autism Outreach Ambassador, DM Corporation Executive, Physics Club President, REAP (research club) President. I also played Basketball for 2 years and was on the starting 6 . Overall I really love NU for their research opportunities since I have experienced it and have visited the campus 2 times and I really want to go there but feel like my GPA is killing my chances. What do you think ?
I got in NU this year ED. I’d say with a 34 ACT and those ECs normally you’d be in for sure ED. If you have some sort of personal issue that affected your GPA significantly sophomore year there’s a section on the common app where you can explain which may let admission officers understand your situation besides having it in your rec letters. What’s your GPA this year upward trend is the most important thing. If you got all As this year your probably fine. If you got some As and some Bs they might defer you which could be really bad because the RD round makes it basically impossible to know for sure if you’ll get in which can be frustrating if it’s your top choice. I’d say your odds are still fairly high though given your high test scores and ECs. Try to write great essays too because often that’s what makes the difference when your borderline. Goodluck if you have any more questions let me know!
You are probably going to get in - I wouldn’t worry. What’s your weighted gpa though?
You should be fairly decent if you explain the sudden drop and apply early. A 34 ACT is phenomenal, if you want to, I would try to raise it a little bit, but you don’t necessarily have to. Overall you should be alright without doing anything, but if you want to maximize your chances to the full potential, I would get your scores as high as you can and then you can rest easy. Your SAT IIs are great, ECs are decent, so I think you should be alright.
