Is Northwestern considered as prestigious as some of the lower ivies? Ive been getting mixed responses, but in terms of companies hiring how much of a target is northwestern compared to schools like cornell, brown, and dartmouth for econ majors
Northwestern is considered ivy-adjacent. I would put them in the same tier as the kid’s table ivies, but that’s just me. Keep in mind the region where you want to work. If you want to be in the great lakes area, then Northwestern is going to be better than say Brown. If you want to work on the east coast, you might be better served going there for college. Networking is easier if you’re in the right region. Ideally, you want your internships to serve as a step towards a job in addition to applied experience you can put on your resume. Getting a job is very much a who you know process these days.
It’s difficult to generalize and that’s why you get mixed responses; you’d get mixed responses also when it comes to whether MMSS + econ trumps econ alone at NU.
My perception is that when it comes to management consulting, NU is as good as anybody and may be better than Cornell, Brown, or Dartmouth. When it comes to Wall Street jobs, NU lags behind them due to distance and the fact that traditionally, the top students at NU tend to be more the management consulting type rather than Wall Street type. In engineering, NU has a one of the best co-op programs in the country with great industry connection. Companies that participate in co-op include Google.
