Not that I'm actually going to base my decision off of this, but, in a highly competitive world, a world where I intend on going into management consultancy/ ibanking/ S and T, how is Northwestern's prestige outside of the midwest?

@ thejoker0909

Northwestern is very well-known outside the Midwest. It is viewed fairly well in the West and the Northeast, especially states like California, Florida, Texas, and the NY-NJ-CT area.

I would put it on par with UCLA, not quite Berkeley or maybe somewhere in between the two. For what that is worth. U of Chicago is somewhere between Berkeley and Stanford.

in nyc, its fairly high, higher than that of berkeley. somewhere a shade south of cornell and north of say, tufts...it also really depends on major

for example, econ is probably better than cornell and tufts, international relations is probably not as good as tufts and i don't know about cornell

Northwestern has gotta be more prestigious than Berkeley...I mean, really...there are a ton of less-than-brilliant undergrads at berkeley, and it's public too.

once you have a job though it doesnt really matter where you went to college...

Oh god, let's please avoid the Berkeley vs. NU war again...

NU > Berkeley in my opinion

there's no debate necessary

NU > UCB Undergrad
UCB > NU (along with everyone else) Grad

How can NU be equivalent to UCLA? Isn't it much better?

Anyways, whats NU compared to Cornell out West or East?

In LA (west), NU has great reputation in the entertainment industry. A lot of people in the West don't even know which ones are the Ivies.
Anyway, ever watched Joey?

[quote]
Joey: Then I am really glad I went there! Go, Wildcats!

Steve: Say, what year did you graduate? Wait, let me guess. Uh.. ’91?

Joey: Wow. Producer, or awesome year-guesser?

Steve: Now, who do I know that was ’91? Uh, Lance Beckman. Do you know Lance?

Joey: Uh, is he here?

Steve: No.

Joey: I was in his wedding!

Steve: You know, if you’re new in town, I should introduce you to the rest of the Northwestern Mafia. It’s too bad. I don’t think there’s anyone else here from ’91.

Joey: Aw, darn. That would’ve been a fun situation.

Steve: All right, come on.

Joey: Okay.

[They go inside]

Steve: ( To a group of guys) Hey, guys. Dave, this is Joey. Joey, this is Dave. Dave is an executive at Universal.

Joey: Oh.

Steve: Mark’s in television.

Mark: Hey!

Joey: Hey.

Steve: And Paul’s a feature director.

Joey: Wow.

Steve: Yeah, Joey’s the class of ’91.

Paul: Oh yeah, what dorm were you in?

Joey: Uh, a different one every night, if you know what I mean.

[They all laugh]

Mark: So what’d you study?

Joey: Uh, not much of anything, I’m afraid.

:D

Hmm, I would agree that NU > Cal for undergrad and NU > Tufts in everything except IR. Cornell and NU are probably at the same level.

NU > Cal & UCLA
I turned down both for NU...

As a midwesterner, I would have to say that Tufts, which is frequently mentioned on these boards (and is undoubtedly an excellent school), isn't known out here.

Back to the OP's original question: Not involved with NU at this point, but I was having this discussion with a NU alumni the other day....She stated that she felt the "alumni pipeline" for jobs from NU in all fields was not well connected to New York....more obviously Chicago and most of the midwest, but she thought recruiting and alumni connections to NY were weak at best.....Just another opinion....

^ Did she mention CA at all? It seems as though a large percentage of the NU student body comes from CA, so maybe that has some influence at least?

just my two cents

out in SoCal NU is well regarded especially in the entertainment industry but also all around, probably equal with UCLA or Berkely. Schools like Tufts and Cornell? people in SoCal have barely heard of them...

How would georgetown compare with NU? Are they about equal?

The Daily Northwestern

Good article on it. (sort of)

It's foolish to suggest that Northwestern is, by any means, a safety school. It's a match at best for high-stats applicants.
