@redpoodles your daughter would have needed to pay tax on any aid she received that was not for tuition/fees/books. Any additional aid would have been income to her.
Your daughter may have been subject to,the kiddie tax…and I believe there is a form you would have completed. But this would have affected HER taxes…not yours.

If your parents had total eachnof $15,000 in loans…that would be less than $4000 a year. If that was even half of their coat of attendance per year…it IS possible that they earned the rest working during school, onnvacations, and in the summers.
The cost to attend colleges on your list were minimally $40,000 or so. That $4000 per year in loans wouldn’t be a drop in the bucket towards those costs now.
