Not my kid by a long shot…but one of the girls was from our town. She is amazing. Was also in the National Spelling Bee when she was in jr. high. Typical over-over achiever!

Not surprising to hear that at least one of them had also participated in the National Spelling Bee. My son went to the Bee for two years and the overwhelming majority of the kids at the Bee were looking to a future in science, technology, medicine. The spelling thing just seemed to be a collateral ‘gift’ that these kids had. My son attends our state’s math and science academy and still doesn’t really like english, history, language. He is very much a math and science kid. This is his senior year and he finished BC Calculus last year, taking Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Number Theory and Linear Algebra for math this year. He has already completed Organic Chemistry, Advanced Chemistry, Advanced Physics, and is taking Applied Engineering and Modern Physics this year. There are 6 to 8 other National Spelling Bee kids at his school and they all are very similar students. None of them are the stereotypical Spelling Bee kids. The spelling just comes naturally to them and none of them ever studied more than a few minutes a day for the Bee, it just wasn’t their thing.
