Not a top tier school

My brother is looking to go away to prep school like me. I was looking at very academic schools but he is more of a B-/C+ student (at a private school) but a good hockey and lacrosse player, not fantastic but pretty good.

Are there any schools that parents out there would recommend my parents to look at?

No all boy schools as he would not be interested.
Thanks!

not a parent, but… Does he need FA?

Taft would be a great school! As long as he isn’t a “slacker” and doesn’t get any less than C+ then it might be a good one to look into ESPECIALLLY for the hockey and lacrosse interest. It’s not a HADES but they wouldn’t take anything less than C+ during the school year. Cs are kind of pushing it. Is he atleast academically motivated a.k.a. a focused student?

My d says look into Suffield Academy

Millbrook, Tabor, Berkshire, Proctor, Brooks, Brewster…Lots of schools meet the criteria.
zp

Suffield wont do. no hockey, otherwise, a nice school.
Zuzu has a good list. However, I would not consider Taft, Brooks, Westminster or NMH because they require freshmen to start w/ physics.
Other schools to consider are Kent, Cushings, Governors, Kimbal Union,Williston,New Hampton, Lawrence, Blair.

Zuzu and maddog have good lists, to which I would only suggest (especially given hockey interests) you also consider Kents Hill School. The Kents Hill Learning Center might also prove useful to your brother in terms of time management, organization, etc.

Even if he would not be interested in an all-boys school, he should look at at least one. He should at least request materials from a wide range of schools, including all-boys schools.

Will your brother enter as a freshman? It makes a difference in terms of playing time at some of these schools.

I
m in an all boys school. I HATE it!
I
ll be a happy dog if I get into one of the schools I`m applying to this yr.

Williston seems like a good choice, NMH too. Vermont Academy would be good. Or something in Canada

Thanks for all the great info!!!

He would need FA like I did and he would be entering as a junior. As he needs FA, it would be better my Dad said if he went to a school where he would have an impact, so not a hockey powerhouse like Avon lets say.

His academics are up and down. He is in advanced science and math and is getting B- in these classes. My mom says when he has the right teacher he gets honors but with an average teacher, his scores drop. I can do well regardless of the teacher but it is not like that for him. He has done physics before.

I would have thought Kent, Westminster and Taft were a stretch for him academically based on what my friends tell me?!?

Which three do you think he would have the most chance of having an impact and getting FA?

Here`s a list of New England area schools with 40%-70% student body on FA.
Hebron Academy
Hoosac
Tilton
Gunnery
Holderness
Kimball Union
Winchendon
Northwood school
Putney
VT. Academy
Fryeburg
Hill
Portsmith Abby
Canterbury

All these schools offer Hockey and lacrosse
All are nurturing academic environments
Good luck

you should really look into kimball union!

i think that with C+s/B-s, kent and taft would certainly be stretches…
if he’s really good at those sports, it’s also possible to get recruited.

Perhaps your parents can investigate hiring an Educational Consultant who specializes in secondary schools. The price of a consultation to develop a list of appropriate schools might not be too high. [Educational Consultants - IECAonline.com | Home](http://www.educationalconsulting.org) or there is a list on boardingschoolreview. Find someone who knows boarding schools, not colleges and not therapeutic schools.

Given the grades and the fact that your brother needs financial aid, I don’t think Blair would be a good match.

Your father is correct that he should look at schools in which he can have an impact. A different academic environment might even bring his grades up.

Atleast try applying to Taft

If he’s not REALLY good at his sports, he probably won’t have a great chance with schools like GLADCHEMMS. Then he should cast a wide net with other schools with strong programs in the sports he plays. In any case, I think his chances of getting substantial FA is relatively small.

you never know if you dont try

Try Millbrook. I know a few very good hockey players that are going there next year. Your brother may be able to be good enough for their team. Also, Proctor is a great school and offers additional academic support for extra money.

Why wouldn’t he apply to Salisbury? The best Lacrosse program in New England this year and Hockey program in New England last year?
