Not a Waitlist but a Sweepstake

Okay I get my letter today informing me that I was in a "select group" offered a spot in the waitlist. So I was thinking maybe I had an okay shot to get offered admissions. Then I read later on that last year out of 473 offered a spot on the waitlist 12!! were offered admissions. So I am pretty much kissing my chances to go to UGA goodbye.

I think that at any college, the year-to-year numbers of people that are offered admission from the waitlist vary greatly. You'd be better off looking at the last 5 to 10 years and getting an average of some sort. For a school I was waitlisted at, their range of students offered admission off the wait list ranges from 0 to 79%, but averages at 30%, so further research into UGA may help you make a more 'likely' decison.

well, to make you feel better, i know a lot of people who got accepted to UGA but have decided to go to another school.

To make you feel EVEN better, I believe UGA's waitlist acceptance rate will be very high this year. Since the EA application was SO easy, they recieved plenty of applicants who would never think twice of going; they were submited on whims. I believe the yield of acceptances and enrollment will be smaller so they will have plenty of room for the waitlist.

Thanks these replies do make me feel better. I am still not expecting to get in so my feelings cant get hurt again.

Hey, I got put on the waiting list to. I was so disappointed. I really would like to go there, but just like you, i don't want to keep my hopes up and see them crashed when I find out that i didn't get in.

I'm staying in Georgia, because that's where i live and hope helps. My only other choice is Georgia State University and that's not really good to me.

I am pretty much in the same situation. My parents are wanting me to stay in state because it is much cheaper. If I dont get into UGA and end up staying in state i will go to Georgia State because they do have a good business program. If I am able to go out of state I will go to Alabama because I like their campus and their atmosphere better. Georgia is the best of both worlds to me. In state and great campus and college atmosphere.

I not only decided not to go but am not going even though i got into the honors program. I was very disappointed with certain aspects of their admissions and their reputation. this is the way it goes. when saying i am going to uga, everyone says wow what a party. when i say i got into gt, eveyone says how smart i am. when i say uga honors, everyone says oh, ok, but gt has a better reputation and is a better school.

the only kids at my school that even consider uga are into partying and i mean hard core. i guess i just hoped the honors program would carry more weight. not going to spend 4 years at school and then can't find a job.

so i am opening up spots for honors and admissions. and i know of lots of kids that got into uga than only used it as a safety net.

Carnut,

Welcome to Georgia's real flagship University ;)

That said, UGA isnt' that bad. I feel that if pressed I'll have to admit that UGA's reputation is just that- reputation. It's a whole different animal now than it was in yesteryear. The university has managed to pull up a decently strong academic base while still keeping its long history of abusing bulldogs to appease the football fans.

The place has really changed, but I still don't think it truly deserves the 'flagship' premiere status that this state affords it.

my husband is from ga and I must say that uga's reputation of being a party school is equal to university of tenn. that alone made us not even consider the school. say what you want, it is all about football and tailgating and many, many kids are there for the fun. not the kind of environment i want for my D.

beatduke, I agree... my parents flat out told me UGA should be my last or second to last option because 1) engineering is a joke there, and 2) they didn't feel safe sending me to the "Hard Liquor Common" schools. They don't even like football, the Yellow Jackets, or any sport at all- they just didn't like the learning environment UGA offered based on what they read about it.

But I know a lot of very intelligent people going UGA who plan to work their asses off and go somewhere in life, so while the school may have such a bad rep, some of its students may be in fact very diligent and promising.

I don't know if this even merits a reply but...

Football is 5 or 6 Saturdays out of the year. Period. Seriously, it gets discussed a lot and it's a great conversation starter but the only time it really affects campus is when the tailgaters invade on Saturday. If you're not interested, you can stay in the dorm or go to the dining halls to get away from the crowds. Or you can enjoy a really fun events that's affordable for all students, it's your choice.

Yes it's a party school but does this mean you have to go to parties? No. You can just as easily walk past the bars downtown and go into the coffeeshops for a stimulating intellectual conversation. It's not that hard to find intelligent people here, especially in the honors program, if you join organizations (i.e. debate societies, advocacy groups, etc.).

The environment is changing drastically. The administration is intent on promoting academic rigor and every new class is better than the last. They're raising more funds, adding more scholarships (Charter Scholarships are being expanded by 33%), and hiring better professors. Already there are tons of great professors and an increasing emphasis on research.

I won't get into UGA-Tech comparisons, except to say if you're going to go by the Princeton Review rankings on Hard Liquor, consider which school is #1 for "Class Discussions Rare", #4 "Professors Get Low Marks", and in the top 20 for bad dorms, an unsightly campus, and least happy students. UGA has flaws, but so does Tech.

I completely agree with you vig180: Football and its corollaries and issues can absolutely be avoided. Btw Tech kids should not criticize Georgia here on its section, I mean come on.

I'm sorry if you took it as criticism; it wasn't meant to be taken as such. I appreciate UGA for a billion things- I'd like to be sure that I'll have some college atmosphere, that I'll have tolerable professors, etc. UGA Business is pretty kick-ass and if I were majoring in anything other than engineering or science, I would probably go to UGA. As I said, know a lot of really great, smart people going there (Honors, FF, Ramsey, and normal!) and I seriously doubt they're going to college for a few beers or tailgate parties. If I didn't get into Tech, I would have gone to UGA without second thought.

I'm sorry you guys took it so personally...

and vig180, don't get me started on Tech's flaws. The Bureaucracy in that school is ridiculous.
