Not allowed makeup test

I was absent from class because I was at a competition for a school club. I gave the teacher a note from the college of business saying how I would be gone for the next few days. Despite letting him know ahead of time and giving the letter from the business school approving of it, he won't let me make up a quiz which makes up about 5% of my class grade. Is he allowed to keep me from taking a quiz because I was gone for a school ec?

Um probably not. Talk to the dean.

Not sure, did you check his syllabus? Maybe he has a statement there saying that you have had to take it before leaving. It's unusual that he would not allow it, you have a valid excuse. I would just check with someone in that department's administration.

The Professor should let you make up the quiz. If athletes can do that sort of thing (no offense to any athletes), then why can't you? I would first speak to the Professor during office hours, then if things are still bad, speak to the department head.

Profs usually have the ultimate authority in their classes. You can talk to the dept head or dean but you might not win.

Check the prof's syllabus. Usually they will not let you make it up, but rather, you get to drop the lowest quiz grade (which would be the quiz you didn't take).

I also agree with the post above me: the prof has authority and the syllabus is a contract.

The prof is likely not required to let you make up the test, unless the syllabus has a clearly stated makeup policy which he is now violating. Rather than just handing him a note and then trying to make up the test afterwards, you should have talked to him in person beforehand and asked about making it up.

It could be that instead of taking this quiz, the next one is worth 5% more. A lot of profs at my school seem to do that if you miss something. I'd ask about this option.

Well what often happens when a prof doesn't let you makeup something when you had a valid excuse for missing it is that he is simply not going to count it in your grade at all. For instance if this was a 5 point quiz and your total grade is out of 100, he will now calculate your total grade out of 95. This usually happens in really large classes because odds are you've heard things about the quiz he didn't want you to know about. In the future, if you're going to miss something, you're more likely going to have to take it earlier than get to make it up later.

I've had lots of HS teachers not let me makeup work for a pre-arranged orchestra concert. And they won't excuse it either. Thank goodness those classes were easy.
