Not another chance thread.

I'm just another nervous guy trying to get into college. I'm a rising senior and will gladly chance you if you want; I'll repay the debt however I can. (I can tell that's gonna go the wrong way.) University of Michigan is my top choice.

[ *] College(s)- University of Michigan, WUStL, Vanderbilt, and Michigan Tech.

[ *] ACT:33

[ *] unweighted GPA:3.5 (Michigan GPA is also 3.5)

[ *] Rank:School doesn't rank

*[ *] Other stats: *

AP exams-(school offers English Language, English Literature, Calculus AB/BC [one class], European History, US History, US Government, Spanish, Latin, and Music Theory)

Calculus BC-5
English Language-4
English Literature-4
Macroeconomics-4
US govt-4
World History-4
Chemistry-5
Physics C: Mechanics-5
Physics C: EM-5

**[ *] Subjective/B:

ECs
Piano playing-4 yrs
Running-4 yrs (I couldn't do XC/Track in grades 9-11 for reasons I'll explain later in this)
Trombone/Baritone-From 6th-10th grade
Jazz Band-9th
National Honors society 11th/12th grade (Our school only offers this to upperclassmen, same for beta club.)
Beta club-11th/12th grade.
Math/Science/Music Theory Tutoring-about 50 hours, ranging from Algebra I to Pre-cal/Trig.
Service projects-Done in national honors society/Beta Club, several small ones that would take too long to post. Our school doesn't offer science or MT tutoring, that one was on my own.
Varsity Cross Country-12th grade.
Varsity Track/Field-12th Grade
Graduating with Honors

SCs-
Unfortunately, my Mother has Multiple Sclerosis, and I help take care of her. My brother already moved out, and we have no nearby family, so it's just me and her. My GPA has taken a bit of damage as a result, and I dropped a few ECs to help take care of her.

[ *] Essays:I'm okay at writing. Not my strongest subject, but I can still pull off things once in a while. My mom is a writer and a former admissions officer, so I'm sure I can get help from her if needed. (I'm not letting her write it obviously)

[ *] Teacher Recs:I'm on good terms with the teachers I plan on asking. I've gotten recommendations from one of them before.

[ *] Counselor Rec:I'm also on good terms with her. Our school isn't overly competitive either.

[ *] Hook I've got Legacy status on Michigan, and minority status everywhere else.
[ *] State or Country:TN (I lived in Michigan for about 14 years, then moved to TN in the middle of 8th grade. )
[ *] School Type:Public
[ *] Ethnicity:Black
[ *] Gender:Male
[ *]Other: I don't know if it mattered, but I took Latin in high school instead of Spanish or French.

22/33 honors Credits (I got stuck in a few standard classes Freshman year, plus I'm using senior project to take AP physics, so it doesn't actually count for honors or get calculated into GPA)
10 Bs
1 C
the rest are As
(our school is on block scheduling, you can get up to 33 credits, 8 per year. It's 33 because one AP class is offered before school.)

That's pretty much it. If you need clarification on something, just let me know. I'd appreciate any input you have, and I wish anybody reading this the best of luck in their studies and college admissions.

Thanks for the chance! Your grades test scores are high but your GPA could be a little higher. However you have great ec’s and an amazing story that should make up for that. Plus, your black! (haha) Being a minority is very helpful. A friend of mine with a similar ACT but a higher GPA easily got into Yale (he was also black). Your APs are impressive and latin is helpful, especially if youre going into medicine or science. The clincher is definetly going to be your story though. Admission directors love people who fight through adversity.

Michigan: match
WUStL: in
Vanderbilt: great chances high match
Michigan Tech: high match

I think that your stats are great. I also think that you should aim a lot higher than the schools that you are looking at. How about Northwestern, Chcago, Notre Dame, USC plus some of the Ivys and other top East Coast schools? Also, what do you plan to major in? Check out the top programs in your preferred major subject. Good luck, Jackuk

Your stats may not seem appealing to an admissions dude/dudette at first, but you have a great story to tell. That’s where your essay comes to play. Talk about your experience with your mother and how it caused you to mature, grow, etc. Definitely look at some higher schools too (USC, Purdue).

Mich: Match (In really)
Mich tech (I don’t know this school so I can’t give you a valid opinion)
WUSTL: In with a great essay
Vandy: in

and honestly being black does help (affirmative action) so I hope to see you go far! Thanks for the chance.

Thanks for chancing me! I think you have a very good and definite chance at UMichigan, Michigan Tech, and Vanderbilt. You have a solid ACT and GPA which are 2 very important factors considered in admissions. All of your EC’s are very good and well rounded! Also, your minority status will help a lot when it comes time to admissions. Washington University in St. Louis might be harder to get into but you still have a chance. I think you have a pretty safe bet at UMichigan Good luck! :)

Your stats are decent (even great considering your circumstances). Your EC’s are good but you should attempt to get some officer/leadership positions in band, track, or service clubs. Taking into account ethnicity and the circumstances surrounding your mom, I’d say aim higher. Consider schools like Rice or Chicago or Northwestern and even some east coast schools depending on your intended major.

University of Michigan - safety
WUStL - low reach (depends on letters of rec and essay)
Vanderbilt - match

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1167426-chance-me-plzzzzzzzzzzz.html

Oh wait you already chanced me -_-.

My main concern are my ECs. I quit band after my sophomore year because I was sick of all the BS from everyone. I went off to do my own thing and play piano. I have a friend who goes to a really good fine arts school, so I might join with him and see if we can do something.

I’m only doing XC/Track next year since I couldn’t do them before, so there’s no way I can get a leadership position from just one year. In fact, our school doesn’t even have team captains for those sports.

I did apply for a position on NHS, but got denied. She said I was a good candidate, but thought I would be too busy to keep up with it considering my other things.

I considered starting an ACT prep course at our school, but I don’t know if I would have the time to keep up with it.

Since a lot of people are suggesting I aim higher, I’ll take a look at some other schools.

Your URM status most likely puts you in at all of these schools, I’d suggest aiming higher, try other top 20s and lower Ivy League schools.

I don’t think there’s affirmative action at University of Michigan. Someone confirm this.

There isn’t. AA was removed in the state of Michigan, and I think California.

I know for sure Cali doesn’t have AA, true.

But I think you should apply to Michigan anyway. I think there’s a reasonable chance we may be part of the Michigan Class of 2016 together.

As being an URM with decent statistics for an inspiring reason, I’d say you have a good chance at some of these schools. Here’s my verdict.

University of Michigan - low match
WUStL - match
Vanderbilt - high match
and Michigan Tech - in? I’m not completely sure

all of the schools you listed are matches and safeties for you (also it’s National HONOR Society, not National Honors Society, just so you know when you write it on your college application :D)

consider applying to a higher-tier school for a reach, maybe UChicago or Duke or even a top ivy, your minority status helps TONS! (scholarships will also be readily available for your minority status as well)

University of Michigan- In, your GPA is slightly low, but your ACT more than makes up for it.
WUStL- like others said, good essay and your in!
Vanderbilt- low Reach, soley because it’s Vanderbilt, and mostly a crapshoot
Michigan Tech- dont know too much, but I think in
