Hey, I have been looking up schools for me to apply to for about 2 months now and i have kept a list of possible schools to apply to.
I am looking for schools that offer a good IR or Poli Sci undergrad education(arabic would be the cherry on the cake) along with a good social scene and just an overal good US college experience.
These are the current schools i am looking into:
George Washington U
American U
USC
UWisconsin
UTexas
Syracuse

Ohio State
Miami Ohio

-continued- (damn keyboard)

UMiami
FSU (safety)

If you could offer any advice or words of wisdom and make sure i am barking up the right tree it would be great.
Thanks

bump ?

Maybe i should mention that i am a junior have a 7.35 (3.4) dutch GPA which is considered very good there, seeing things very black and white i think universities would make it a 3.4 but there are so many other factors and differences that it would be very hard to exactly translate.
I took an SAT prep course last year and got a 180(0) score. I am taking another prep course before i take the real deal on May 5. I expect a better score this time than on the prep( i heard if you really pay attention and study during each prep course basically helps you add 200 points to a score ).
Good extracurriculars
Great Letters of recommendation
Play very competitive club soccer and will maybe even try out for a team(if that would help me get in).

I am a US citizin but not a resident so i think for state schools i can apply as a US student but for privates as an Int'l(what would probobly lower my chances considerably).

My stats aren't super so that's why there is no HYP, Gtown, JHU or Tufts on my list of IR schools so...
Any suggestions or tips or comments or whatever are still welcome. Thanks

I'm from Texas and I am applying all out of state because I really want a change of scenery. However, simply going by your qualifications, the University of Texas would be a very good match for you, especially if you swing getting into the honors program, which will get you the big university feel but also small classes.

The poli sci program is very strong, and as Austin is our capital, it is awesome for internships and job opportunities. Texas is also very big on international business, considering our large size and many resources (oil, anyone?) and UT is great for IR also.

Austin is probably THE best college town in the US. Its metropolitan, has a great social scene and night life, and is called the live music capital. Because it is a big city, Austin does not revolve around UT students, but unlike cities like Chicago and New York, Austin is really open, friendly, and supportive and the city (and the state) love the longhorns.

And just because your stats aren't super doesn't mean that you can't consider HYP, Gtown, or JHU for grad school. You get a clean slate your freshman year, and if you work hard, you can get in in four years. This is probably a better idea anyway. Consider undergrad in a prominent large-state capital (Austin), getting experience there, then going to Gtown for grad school and clerking in the US capital. Its all about perspective, really.

Thanks for the post, it was really helpful. I wasn't not considering those schools for Graduate, just undergrad.
UT is one of my favorite schools and it's great to know that they would offer a great education in those specific fields. Keep it coming if you can ! Thanks!

god forgive me... bump

how about unc? i'm just asking because that's where i'm going next year. i know that they have an international studies major, so does anyone know anything about it?

Just to contribute to the mess of another IR thread....

USC's School of International Relations vs. GWU's Elliott School...for undergrad...thoughts?

hm.... UNC is pretty good I believe. UNC also have a major/minor for Peace and Conflict Studies that looked awsome! Check that out aswell.

USC vs GWU... i've encountered this on several other threads. Both have amazing programs. Elliot might be more prestigious and it's location is hard to beat.
It's a big campus and there is no school spirit, you won't find much grass on the campus aswell (they have a second campus in Virginia which is beatiful).

USC is a great program with more school spirit, beatiful campus, great weather and a good social scene.
The Trojan network might help you get a job in California after school too. Same goes for GWU in DC.

It's really a toss up.

hmm, thanks for the input everyone...by all means, if anyone else has insight, please contribute
