Not another Stern vs. Haas post!

I’m a business major from California deciding between two schools, Stern and Haas. I’ve been reading up on ranking and other things, but in the end they’re all pretty subjective. I know each of the schools have their own forte (Stern: finance / Haas: Management) but I’m still not completely sure what I want to do in the future. If I went to New York, I would probably work on Wall Street for several years, but I can’t see myself living there permanently and I ultimately see myself moving back to California. Should I just stay here and go to Haas? I had a few questions I was hoping I could get cleared up to get a better understanding of the school.

What is Stern’s reputation academically, socially, professionally? (Hardcore academic students? Party central? What kind of jobs outside of wall street?)

What are some stereotypes associated with Stern and how accurate are they in your opinion? (stereotypes: “Berk is full of ugly people” “UCSB is full of party people”)

How do the two schools compare on opposite coasts? (Haas in the east, Stern in the west)

Last question (probably the hardest): How would you compare Haas and Stern when put up against each other, not by discipline, but by the school as a whole? (Assuming one wanted to get into business, but wasn’t sure which area of business he would get into, which school do you feel is best?)

Don’t feel like you have to answer all the questions. Haha. Just getting an answer to one would really help me out a lot.

Thanks

The one thing that makes me worry about big cities is

TERRORISTS :(
Since a person I knew died in WTC, I don't know if I wanna go to NYC
.... yeah. I am scared

.......you're letting fear dictate your life?

i bet you're more likely to die from a poisonous snake bite than you are to get hit by a terrorist attack in NYC.

at least you'd die happy in the city.

haha. no one has anything to say??

Yeah, uh that's really pretty ridiculous to say you're worried about getting caught up in a terrorist attack if you were to attend Stern. In fact, maybe you should stop going to San Francisco because you might get hit by a trolly.

filmmakerjack - i cant comment on the schools themselves because ive never heard of haas (but im not studying business so...okay, well except i can tell you haas is on the WEST coast, and stern is on the EAST lol), but i just wanna say dont rule out a place bc you cant see yourself living there later. id go where youd get the best opportunities and will get the most out of your education

How about earthquakes? Note that the Hayward Fault "splits the uprights of the football stadium at Cal Berkeley"!

hahha i know right?

i love how there is no useful answer to the question

Stern is a 4-yr program, whereas Haas only admits undergraduates who have completed 2 years at either Berkeley or other comparable institutions. Also, Stern graduates mostly proceed to Wall Street, so if you want to do finance, Stern is a much better choice. Also, I believe Stern has a great emphasis on international business (ISP), so it might be better for an undergraduate program. I'd suggest that you complete Stern's BS program then move onto Haas for MBA.

One Word: STERN.

Stern's of comparable caliber to Haas at Berkeley, Sloan at MIT, Tepper at CMU, and Ross at Michigan. Oh, and Wharton at Penn.

I'd say go to Wharton/Harvard/Dartmouth/Columbia for MBA, but I hate CA.

There was a MBA ranking in a recent issue of BusinessWeek. You might want to check that out. It seems like the graduates of Harvard and Stanford MBA programs do a lot better than those of Columbia and Dartmouth. Anyway, go to Stern.

i would go with stern

Well you're posting this question in a NYU thread, so don't be surprised if most people here recommend Stern.

Hey, yeah I realize the question as to which school is best is probably a little impartial. I'll probably put one in the berk forum and see what they say.

aunt jemima is pretty dead on as far as my plans go for now. I'm pretty sure I'll end up at stern for undergrad and at haas for mba.

Post on the business major. most people said Stern because Stern is better, atleast from my perspective.
