I have lots of passion and aspiration to serve in the military. However, i also have a dream school which is not Air force academy. I’ve heard if an academy is not your first choice they look the other way because they want full commitment. Does anyone know if this is true? I’m also applying to westpoint, do air force admissions want you to just want air force?

Air Force Academy and West Point are not colleges, they’re great institutions, that provide education and experiences, to develop officers for their respective services. If you are not “all in” you’re not likely to make it. Put it this way…show up as an 18 year old on Induction Day and you’re in until 27 - or longer if you fly.

Thanks i get what you’re saying. So if an academy is an aspiration of mine your saying they should be listed as my first choice?

I am not sure it has to be your first choice. When I was applying, I was only applying to Air Force because I thought it might be a cool challenge, but it was near the bottom of my list at first. I went to summer seminar and hated it, but after visiting my other choices (none military at all) I realized where I wanted to be was USAFA. Now I am a junior, I am excited to be an officer and I could NEVER picture myself anywhere else. What I am saying is, it doesn’t have to be your first choice right now, you might change your mind later. What matter is that if you decide to go to a service academy, you need to be committed to it.

Thanks that post is really helpful. I’m also going to summer seminar and visiting colleges this summer. i hope this will give me a better perspective on what direction i want to take my life. What seems to be the only certain factor is that i do and always have wanted to serve my country. As i mature this goal only gets stronger and stronger whether it is enlisted, ROTC, or an academy it is something i will always pursue. An academy is a fairly new idea/aspiration of mine and i think it’s been avoided solely because i wasn’t sure if i was good enough. Whatever i end up doing for my secondary education i know it will involve the military. Whether it be a military institution or an ROTC program. That is my number one priority.

I am a junior at USAFA as well and don’t see myself anywhere else even though I had my doubts in the beginning.

Good luck
