Not Completing Your Major by Fourth Semester?

So what happens if, as a transfer, you don't complete your major in four semesters? I transferred here as an English major and spent my first and second semester working on completing that major; I'm in my third semester now, just declared a philosophy major and am planning to take only philosophy courses that count toward the major from here on out. Right now I'm planning to take five courses in the fall in order to complete the major, but my worry is that this will prove to be too much work and that I'll end up having to drop one so that I can actually do well in the four classes that I do take. My question is, what happens then? Would I be able to complete my major in the spring?

In L&S, if you take more than four semesters from transferring in as a junior, you have to make sure that you complete all degree requirements before you reach the unit ceiling (or any other constraint on enrollment for additional semesters, such as running out of money).

[Office of Undergraduate Advising: Unit Ceiling](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/registration/unitceiling.html)

Thanks for the speedy reply. So if by my fourth semester I am over the unit ceiling (which I will be), I have to complete my major in the summer?

Summer, or Extension’s Concurrent Enrollment, as noted in the page linked above.

If you cannot finish everything within the unit limit, the ones that are best to leave for later are the ones available in the summer and/or tend to have space available in fall or spring even after everyone has registered for phase 1 and 2.

But if you can plan your schedule to have completed 130 or fewer units by the end of the fourth semester, then you can register for another regular semester. Note that you do not have to include deductible units like AP credit, community college units after completing 70 units of college work, etc. for the purposes of the unit ceiling. The unit ceiling is 136 units if you have more than one major (do you have both the English and philosophy majors?).

Off topic, but the unit ceiling ONLY counts units taken at Cal correct?
