Not enough time?

My parents tell me that they haven't got their forms for 2012, and they say that's the case with most people.

However, the CSS will be removed by Jan. 17, and I don't know if I'll recieve the forms by then. This is a problem because many schools require all finanical aid info. to be submitted by Feb. 1st or 15th. And a lot of them require the actual form, and not simply "estimates".

Does anybody else see this is a problem? I'm not sure what to do, so I would really appreciate some help!

Where did you see this? Certainly the 2013-14 profile isn’t closing on Jan 17th. Maybe the 2012-13 will be?

I think it means the CSS for the current school year (2012-2013) will be closing on that date. Or maybe it was some date in February for the 2012-2013 school year. After spending all afternoon looking at that @#$% CSS profile, my brain is on overload.

OP, many people with complex taxes do not have their actual tax returns (signed) with final numbers by Feb. 15. I know I won’t, as I have a small business. I need to get some forms from banks and other providers (hopefully by the end of January), then my accountant needs to prepare my small business returns. Only then can I do my personal return. So don’t sweat it too much, the colleges are used to this. Just ask your parents to move it along as quickly as they can. If you will not have final numbers by the date the CSS is supposed to be done, usually you will want to complete it with estimates.

If you need 2012 tax forms, then you are completing CSS Profile for 2013-14 school year. It will not be unavailable after January 17. As others have stated, you can complete the Profile with estimates, and then update schools once the tax return is completed. Employers have until January 31 to mail the W2s, but there are other forms that may or may not be available by then. Colleges deal with this all the time, and will understand. None of them require the “actual form” because they don’t see the forms until later when they verify your information (which many will do before finalizing their financial aid offer).

Many students who applied Early Decision or Early Action already submitted the CSS profile - and obviously had to use estimates, because they did so before the year was over. Complete it with estimates, and send it. I doubt anyone will be able to complete the FAFSA with “verified” numbers by February 15, because the IRS won’t process any tax returns before January 30, and it takes time to upload the information for FAFSA to pull in.

Do your parents have their final pay stubs from 2012? Those should have most of the information that will appear on the W2, and can be used for your estimates.
