Not Enough?

Im currently a sophmore and i literally have like no awards..... what awards do other highly amazing sophomores have? or is it just because we are young?

yeah its hard to get lots of awards man especially if u r at a inner city school like me. do u have any school awards? those r the easiest but count for least. remember that very few ppl get fancy international awards, period. r u gud at math? try AMC. or the science olympiads.

im a very small town person. and i dont think i qualified…

im trying to get into some summer interns but i don’t really have any awards to list… all i have is like best in whatever class which i dont think is worth writing?

It’ll be fine, man. Don’t worry. It’ll all be fine.
Is this unhelpful? Sorry, I’m just feeling very… relaxed.

You are screwed, sorry. Step it up and get some. AMC, AIME, phyics/bio olympiads, research competitions, writing and poetry. All that jazz.

any notable research competitions, and writing and poetry???

Most people don’t get many awards as sophomores, but giraffezs listed some god possibilities. Most prestigious research competitions are only for seniors, but try entering for local science fair.

Quit making damn threads that don’t have titles which tell what the thread is about. Jesus.

Who the Hell cares about high school awards?

^for real!!!

I don’t have too many straight up awards, but I’m not too worried. I’ve gotten accepted and attended some amazing programs and have interned at some really interesting places. These acceptances were competetive enough so that I feel like by adcoms it’s considered awardish.

what were these places/ programs?

You can either be a really good student (lol for me) or you can do a lot of extracurriculars. But don’t mix up “lot of ECs” with resume padding, make sure each extracurricular means something to you, and if you had to elaborate in say, a college interview, you could go on and on about it.

Lag made me double post, if a mod would delete this thank you

^^Yeah watch out for resume padding, don’t do things for the sake of awards or for the sake of doing something.

then wouldn’t most people just sit around and watch t.v all day? this is reality.

BUMP

Maybe that is the attitude that is getting you no awards, hm?

If you really believe in something, or have fun doing something, and actually get something notable out of it, then that’s not resume padding. Just starting a club or being in a club that doesn’t do anything is resume padding. If you’re not there because you see it as something other than something on your resume, then that’s bad.

yeah all my activities focus on stuff that i like and want. but i want awards to prove that these were actually useful and not just for fun.

If you want school awards, you have to have strong academics, and you have to stand out amongst your classmates. Alternatively, if you have some sport or some other team that you can win something in, like a physics team or a math team, you can fill your resume with those, and it’ll still look great. Unless you don’t count those as awards.

yearsofwisdom, try some summer programs that you have to pay for. I know they’re not optimal, but at least they’ll give you some cred and perhaps preparation for summer before senior year? It’s too late for CTY, but UConn has a 3 week research program, and many other places probably do too.

are school awards really that distinguishing among candidates for programs?
