Not everyone's problem

I’m going to UMass Amherst, my major is Economics. I’m a bit a nervous because UMass amherst is a big school and it’s in west of Massachusetts. I do not like to believe in stereotypes but i still want to know how minorities are treated. Im from India, I came to here duing my senior year at high school. I know Umss amherst is a diverse school but are there any diverse group of kids? Or is it like group of white kids and other group of minorties. Is there any diversity at parties?

Well, there’s an international group for minorities, there’s CMASS, there’s a “cultural experience” living area in Northeast, and there are “cultural” frats and sororities as well. I’m not really sure how to answer your question really though, because for the most part, people have a choice in which if they want to hang out with other minorities or not. Like for me personally, most my friends are white, but that’s just cause I fit in with them pretty well (I’m actually Asian if you’re wondering). However, I do also have a couple of friends who are in the “cultural” frats and sororities, but those friends are usually more comfortable hanging out with people who are Asian as well. I mean, it all depends on the person really I guess. There are tons of resources if you want to find a place to fit in with other minorities, however, for the most part, there isn’t like a campus wide racist undertone or anything if that’s what you’re worried about.

“Cultural” frats nd sororities? Is it something like frats and sororities full of ‘non-white’ people? What I meant to ask is that do you usually white people associating with minorities? Do you usually see a lot of ‘non-white’ people at a regular fraternity or sorority?

Yeah basically, but there are a few white people in them I think. And of course white people associate with minorities, I have no idea where you’re getting this idea of segregation from. It’s just that since this school’s demographics is ~60% white, you’re gonna have to get used to seeing a lot more white people around than any other race. As for parties, again, it depends on the parties that you go to. I’d say roughly around 20% of the people that are at the frat parties that I’m at aren’t white, but then again, I don’t go to many frat parties anymore cause they’re more or less the same thing all the time.

I’m pretty much used to seeing a lot of white people around as the school I go to is 97% white.

thank you

I would ask this on the umass amherst subreddit (/r/umass/) , as there are more current students browsing.

D is an Asian student at UMass. Her friend group is pretty diverse. I’ve never heard her express any concerns in this area.
