Not fulfilling writing requirement

Hey, I've taken one english course and 4.0'ed it but my community college won't let me take another one since I don't need it for graduation

Am I automatically rejected from all UC's because I have only taken one English course, and not two? Or am I still in the running because I have a 3.75 GPA

What? That makes no sense. You need it to transfer, so you should be able to take it. Plus, I’ve never heard of a CC giving a crap what classes you take. People take a bunch of random crap that they don’t need, it’s the community college way. That’s not your case though. You need that class.

Well because there are only a small amount of English 200 courses available in the spring quarter. and I’m already taking 18 credits (quarter) so they won’t let me take over 20. Also, they said I would be taking a spot away from someone who needs that class for graduation since I dont

It depends on what your major is and which UC you applied to.

Find another CC to take it at.

Your community college sucks. That’s all I have to say.

I am applying to UCB, UCLA, and UCSD for Biology. Am I still good or completely screwed? I emailed them saying I will take it in my first term there… and flamingpancake, it’s too late, we are two weeks into the quarter and passed all the add class periods for all nearby CC

Drop one of your less-important classes immediately and add the other English course. Get your stuff together bro…

I do have my “stuff” together. The classes I am taking are required for graduation… Calc 3, Ochem 3, and Ecology/Evolution. I can’t drop any, and even if I could it’s too late to add a course…

All I’m asking is do my chances significantly decrease or will it decrease only slightly or am I automatically rejected?

i think your screwed. taking the second english course is a REQUIREMENT, not recommended. sorry. the same happened to a friend of mine at the cc. he is here for another year because he didnt finish the requirement. he submitted his SIR and everything lol.

do whatever it takes to get english.

Does your major require IGETC or is it a CORE prereq? If so, rejected. Regardless of circumstances.

If not 1: Your chances of getting accepted are lowered considerably.

There’s a huge piece of information missing here. I do not believe for one moment that your community college is refusing to let you take a required for transfer English course. It is more likely you’re trying to take the wrong course or there is a better option. I also believe it is also more likely that they are simply not wanting to grant permission for taking excess units above the maximum.

If this is a California Community College and one that is on the quarter system, there are only three colleges this can be: De Anza, Foothill, or Lake Tahoe. Both De Anza and Foothill use the 1A, 1B, 1C, 2, etc in terms of numbering their English writing courses that meet the writing/English requirements for transfer. Lake Tahoe uses 100s and 200s. Since you mentioned the course being in the 200s and only the latter has those, you must be going there.

Off-topic: LTCC’s website is terrible and I am sorry you have to deal with this school. I’m fairly sure this is on purpose and that is definite points lost for them. They’re forcing you to meet with a counselor to create an academic plan.

Anywho, I think I found your problem. You say you’re trying to take a 200 level class, yes? Go down to the third page of this pdf (the IGETC page):
http://www.ltcc.edu/data/ResourcePDF/pio09-10general%20ed.pdf

You need ENG 103 to meet the second English requirement for IGETC. This is, of course, if I am correct which college you attend. And, if I am correct, this is why you are not being allowed to take a 200 level course. Not only will you exceed the allowable units for the quarter, but it is not the course you need.

According to the catalog, there are five offerings this spring of ENG 103 (three of which are closed). The two open offerings are online.

Even if you are not following IGETC, the course patterns needed for the reading and writing requirement (for UCB according to assist) are ENG 101, 102, and 103. ENG 211 can be substituted for either 102 or 103. If you only complete two of this course pattern, it only counts as one half of UCB’s R&W requirement.

There is one offering of ENG 211 with open spots according to the schedule of classes on LTCC’s website. Since that is a creative writing class, it is probably a requirement needed for others and you have other options where as some others may not.

Now, if I have guessed wrong and you’re not going LTCC, I still believe the issue is something similar that you are simply trying to take either an incorrect class or one that you have a different option for.

^ Awesome advice and amazing deductive skills

@Kender

I felt like I just read the solution to a Sherlock Holmes mystery.

holy crap kender! Are you like a criminal science major??? A descendant of Sherlock Holmes? That was freaking AWESOME!

@jnhago you NEED the english classes. No way around it. I asked the people at UCB and UCLA admissions directly if I HAD to take the english classes and they said that before they even LOOK at the application, the run a checklist of requirements, among them the english classes. If you don’t have them, it’s an automatic denial. Sorry dude…

@Kender

WOW.

If I was at that school, I would probably be paypal’ing Kender a million dollars…but… I go to a Washington State Community College. It’s probably more of the excess credits than anything but either way I can’t take the course. Do you think if I call the UC’s and say I will take in the summer but I can’t right now due to extenuating circumstances, I might get a pass till summer?

Wow Kender, did you invent the internets?

“The internet is serious business!” I love kender.
