My daughter was also an RA for her sophomore year and it helped tremendously!
All I can say is Hallelujah for noneducational auditions and call-backs. After months, I am seeing my kid again. I think we all needed a reminder of “why”.
@bisouu How did your daughter like being an RA?
@Ouiser I’ll drink to that! As this process was wrapping up my D got a lead in Crucible, which in a high school of 3,000 kids ain’t nothing. Then Friday night she did three great songs at the school’s acoustic show. Both reminding her -and me - that despite the rejections, yeah she’s good at this.
@marg928 My D did a walk in audition for Cornish at Los Angeles unifieds. She didn’t plan on it at all, we were wandering the halls of the Westin an came upon them. They told her if she wanted to come back the following morning they could fit her in if they had a cancellation. My D was up early and out the door the next day and was first in line for a walk in spot and got the only one they had. They spent a lot of time with the students both singing and dancing. They also offered the most helpful feedback. Alas, there’s no word yet.
I am DYING to weigh in on this-but as D has two more programs to hear from, it wouldn’t be prudent. I will say this: There ARE other options; and it is naive to believe that the “casting a wide net” philosophy means that your student would be equally happy with any of the 13, 16, 20, 23,…schools on their list. They won’t. They have their “Top 5”, their “Top 10”,…and beyond that-they are probably gonna utter the “G Word” (gap year)…and also some other unmentionable verbiage And that’s ok.
Can’t wait to hear what you have to say @owensfolks once those 2 are in
LMAO, @bisouu I keep joking to my H and D that “my” (her) final decision story is gonna break CC; or perhaps make for a great Dickensesque musical script. The highs, the lows, the WTFs,…
@owensfolks Me, too! BtW: Have I mentioned how…nevermind, you all know how I am feeling. :((
@owensfolks Your killing us!
I wonder… if anyone has considered schools that just do training and don’t give degrees… like
The Musical Theatre Academy in London
http://www.themta.co.uk/
Or Circle in the Square
http://www.circlesquare.org/
In some ways while they are expensive they are only 2 years and the actor is out working sooner.
@ownsfolks Yes, please do tell!!
@marg928, Cornish has a very good program, fine faculty and is in a city that likes its theater. It’s worth a look.
As the next wave of notifications come in, I feel my anxiety level rising. I just may need therapy when this is all over.
Hoping you hear some good news and quick:)
SCAD’s program is a non audition program and I think rolling admissions. I have been to over 40 NYC showcases from all the programs including the top schools, and their showcase (though it had both BFA and MFA students) was one of the best. Savannah is gorgeous. They have musicals, straight plays, tv series and film projects. If you need another program, I highly recommend SCAD. (The audition is for scholarship money.)
@mtmom2014 Isn’t the cost of SCAD fairly high with some financial aid but not a lot.
My middle daughter chose SCAD over other much more well known and well thought of programs. I only agreed after seeing their showcase and getting some pretty good $. I then asked for more money and got it. There is also a group you audition for when you are there and that is an extra hefty scholarship amount. In the end we pay in the low $20’s so sort of doable. Also moving off campus can really reduce costs in Savannah. You can add another $5500 for her apt and food.
@mtmom2014 Can you please share more info about the auditioned group at SCAD and how you approached the need for additional aid? Our D has been accepted there and has received a so-so award, part academic and part from audition. We were hoping/expecting more since the lead professor she auditioned with asked her to wait afterward so he could interrupt a professional tv audition session that was also going on (for current students) and introduce her to the department chair. He said to the chair that he wouldn’t be doing that again…just wanted him to “remember her.” You just never know…
