not getting in as a transfer, don't want to settle

So I was wondering, and I'm sure this has happened before, but what if transfers don't get into their top UC school and they DON'T want to settle for anything less? Is it possible to stay at their cc another year (even if they already have 60 credits) and take more prereq classes for their major and get all A's and try again?

I remember I talked to my cc counselor about this and she was the head of the counseling department and told me that you can take as much units as you want, but they will only accept 60 or 70 or whatever the limit is and you can't pick which ones they choose. IDK I'm confused!

Basically my questions is: if you're a transfer and you've finished IGETC and most of your prereq. and you DON'T get into your top school and you DON'T want to settle, is there anything you can do? Like continue taking cc courses and get all A's?

Short answer: Yes.

You can take 1,000 units if you want so long as they’re all from a CC and it doesn’t matter how long you stay at your CC for. The UC will take a maximum of 90 units, but anything over that (earned in UC-transferable course) will still count into your accumulative GPA. So for example, if you have 90 units and a 3.0, then take 20 more units and get As in all of them, you’ll still only transfer with 90 units but your transferable GPA will be higher (assuming those 20 units were all in UC-transferable course work.)

So yes, stay another year, work your butt off and crank your GPA up. Don’t pay any attention to how many units you have as long as you earn all of them at a CC.

Sure, you can take all the courses you want, but they’ll only accept 60 credits. The rationale for this is financial. The transferring school wants you to stay for 60 more credits before you graduate.

From my experience, employers do not look at your gpa except where you graduated from. It’s not like your gpa from one school is added to your gpa from the second school. Nope. The gpa from where you graduate from is what matters. The benefit of having a strong gpa now, while you’re at a CC, is to show what you’re capable of but it won’t matter when you’re out, looking for a job.

@Grimes99- Thanks so much! I’ve been wondering this for SO long now. I don’t think I’m going to get into UCB or LA and I really don’t want to settle, unless it’s for UCI. But I checked out your threads you’ve posted and I read that you started doing cc courses since your soph. year in h.s. and so have I! So you seem to know a lot about cc credits. I was wondering, do you go to UCLA now? And how many credits did you have when you got there? Thanks so much! You encouraged me SO much!

And one more question if you don’t mind…If I did stay and got all A’s, would I be taking basically my IGETC classes over again except different ones then I’ve taken? And the UC’s will accept my A’s rather than my B’s?

You can take any cc classes you want - IGETC or not, they will count toward your GPA if they’re UC-transferable. If you take an extra year, you can beef up your app by taking courses related to your major.

“And the UC’s will accept my A’s rather than my B’s?”
All your UC-transferable grades affect your GPA. So if you had a 3.0 in 60 units (your first two years) and get a 4.0 in the 15 units you take during the fall that you re-apply (your fifth semester), you will apply with a 3.2. If that makes sense.

@altschool-Right I understand that everything goes into my GPA, except I always thought that if you do more than 70 credits, they will only choose 70 credits to go into your app. Therefore, I’m wondering which 70 credits they choose, you’re highest scores or just random? Thanks for your help btw! Really appreciate it!

You get subject credit for everything you take. So, you can take as many units as you want and they’ll look at ALL of your courses and grades - the only limit here is the number of units that will count toward your BA.

Glad I could help :)

I don’t actually go to UCLA. I wen to UCI last quarter (long lonnnng story on this one) but I intentionally withdrew after last quarter and I’m going to UCSD in the fall on TAG. But yes, I was at a CC since 10th grade. At the time I started going to UCI, I had 124 units from my CC.

If you stay and get all As, you’re going to want to take classes that you haven’t already taken and passed. UCs will only take the first passing grade of a particular course, so if you got a C or a B, there’s no way to retake a course and supplant that with an A. Additionally, most CCs won’t even allow you to retake a course if you’ve already passed it. If you take additional courses that are on IGETC/UC transferable (that you haven’t already taken), they will count into your transfer GPA, regardless of whether or not IGETC is already completed.

@Grimes99- Thanks so much! Everything makes so much more sense now lol. I’m going to talk to my cc counselor tomorrow just to make sure 100%, but you totally cleared things up for me. Congratulations on UCI and UCSD though! That’s so awesome, really. May I ask what you GPA was for UCI and UCSD? If not, totally understand. I applied this semester with a 3.20 and good EC’s, but I don’t want to settle for anything unless it’s UCI (UCI has a Journalism program I want to get into). So I guess I’ll just suck it up and stay for another year, which I’m happy about actually. Do you think I have a chance of getting into UCI right now with a 3.2? And also, do you know what the average GPA is for transfers getting accepted to UCLA and UCB? Thanks so much Grimes99! And thanks too @altschool!

Awesome. Thanks!

My GPA at the time of being admitted to UCI was a 3.03 and I wasn’t on TAG, just a regular applicant. For UCSD, I applied with a 3.15 I believe.

I don’t believe journalism is an impacted major at UCI, so I don’t think you’ll have a problem getting in. Like I said, I got into a non-impacted major (poli sci) there with a 3.03.

To be brutally honest, you won’t get into UCLA or UCB with that GPA (barring something drastic like you won the Medal of Honor :stuck_out_tongue: .) We had people on this board last year getting rejected with 3.8s and above. The competitive level is crazy.

I wouldn’t worry about UCI… you shouldn’t have any problem getting in with that GPA.
