how many people REALLY go to lecture? ive heard that sometimes it gets to be less than 30%. is it true that some professors make attendence mandatory? how do they enforce it?

Some professors give quizzes everyday that you can't make up. And these quizzes can be counted for 25-30% of your grade sometimes.

And those who don't go to lecture must know the material to skip it. But the fact is, if you don't attend lecture, don't expect to pass the class...but some people manage to do it so....

why would u not go to lectures...if you dont like the class..then why take it? plus its a waste of money...just go to it....

Which classes are webcasted?

Chem 1A I believe (but it is meant to be a tool for you to go back and catch things, not to replace the actual lecture)

Astro 10 is webcasted, but I'll still go. You should never miss lecture. It makes things a hell of a lot easier when you already understand the material when you open up your textbook at home. That's high school experience.

webcast.berkeley.edu - look at the list of classes.

I would say the amount that go to lecture depends heavily on the class and the professor. However, in general, most students attend class. I wouldn't say that attending class religiously is necessary to do well in a class (at least it hasn't been for me), but it definitely helps to attend class. Sometimes you'll just be too tired, sometimes something awesome will come up you don't want to miss, sometimes you'll just sleep through a class. As long as it doesn't become a habit to miss, you should be fine.

I would DISCOURAGE not going to class. Unless if you're a premed major and got a 5 on the bio test and are taking it because you HAVE to to get into med school I wouldn't overlook anything. Unless if you've got nothing better to do than watch webcast (becasue trust me you won't watch it ALL the time live) in your free time, I'd just go to class. Plus you can meet new people.
