Not gonna sugar coat: what allowance is reasonable?

I live in Illinois, which has one of the highest minimum wages in the country, at $8.25. At 20 hours a week, that would come out to $660 before taxes. Take taxes out, and you’re down to around $500. Not quite $800 a month. Washington has a minimum wage of $9.19, which would equal around $735 at 20 hours a week, before taxes…but again, take those taxes out and you’re $550’ish.

In either case, even if you were working a job and making that much per month…wouldn’t it be a good idea to save some of it? If you’re spending that much per month, I’m going to hazard a guess that you could make a few spending cuts. That’s $25-30 a DAY that you’d be spending.

I’d say $300-400 is reasonable. There are a lot of variables at play obviously, but a budget needs to be worked out. College is a great time to start learning how to budget your money. I wish I had parents that could afford to give me an allowance. I have to make my own way though. I’m getting through college with financial aid and work study, with some student loans in the near future. I still manage to do just about everything that I want to do, and barely spend any money on it. I don’t eat too many steaks though.
