Not gonna sugar coat: what allowance is reasonable?

I would think a good starting place would be $400/month, if they can afford it. If it would be a burden, start with a lower number. You can always adjust if the amount is too high or too low.

I live in Illinois, which has one of the highest minimum wages in the country, at $8.25. At 20 hours a week, that would come out to $660 before taxes. Take taxes out, and you’re down to around $500. Not quite $800 a month. Washington has a minimum wage of $9.19, which would equal around $735 at 20 hours a week, before taxes…but again, take those taxes out and you’re $550’ish.

In either case, even if you were working a job and making that much per month…wouldn’t it be a good idea to save some of it? If you’re spending that much per month, I’m going to hazard a guess that you could make a few spending cuts. That’s $25-30 a DAY that you’d be spending.

I’d say $300-400 is reasonable. There are a lot of variables at play obviously, but a budget needs to be worked out. College is a great time to start learning how to budget your money. I wish I had parents that could afford to give me an allowance. I have to make my own way though. I’m getting through college with financial aid and work study, with some student loans in the near future. I still manage to do just about everything that I want to do, and barely spend any money on it. I don’t eat too many steaks though.

I’ve never heard of a college student holding a $10/hr job on a college campus unless it was a specialized position.
The typical position like a office or research assistant will pay minimum wage…it varies but lets just go with the $8/hr figure. That’s $640 per month before taxes.

I think you should tell your parents that $300-400 per month should be more than fine. If you have a meal plan and live in the dorm, you will find it kind of difficult to even spend that unless you blow it all on alcohol every weekend.

$100/ month here.

What’s an allowance? My mom would barely be able to afford $50 a month to give me, let alone a couple hundred… holy crap.

Man, I remember when I got my work study job on campus doing skilled research for a professor (aka not cleaning test tubes). I was making a whole $6 an hour. My brother was making more than that down the street at Blockbuster, lol.

My entire income is from doing work study in my schools tutoring center, mainly tutoring math, and english. And also doing math tutoring on the side. I couldn’t even imagine having an allowance.

ADULTS shouldn’t get an allowance.
