I am an international senior (from India) beginning my applications to US unis. I am aiming for some of the top schools for economics/business/finance- Stern, Wharton, Duke, UChicago, to state a few.

My SAT scores aren't great- 1990 and 2060.
I am doing the IB diploma and have a 43 predicted.

Just did my subject SATs and while I got 800 in Physics, I only got 700 in Math 2.

Should I take the Math 2 in Jan again? What do you suggest?

While 700 is at the bottom of the range it is considered acceptable at all of those schools. You don’t have retake it but if you do it won’t hurt either- Good luck!

Your subject test scores aren’t your problem. Your SAT scores are too low for the schools you listed as an international student. You won’t get into Wharton, Duke or UChicago. I hope you have some reasonable safeties.

Thanks for all your replies. My safeties are Rollins and Northeastern but the problem is I don’t want to shell out 40 for a place I don’t really want to go to.

Oh well, let’s see. Other colleges I’m applying to:

Thanks for all your replies. I didn’t list my ECs- I thought that making comparisons may be difficult. But I will do so now:

volunteered at an orphanage (academic related) for a time period spanning 8 months- including running a marathon for their cause

taught for a couple of weeks at a school during a summer

spent a couple of weeks with an NGO, advising residents about garbage segregation (which is not common in India)

few other one-time volunteering causes

3 MUNs, including 2 Special Mentions

leadership role during school festival

travel blogging, and active on various travel forums (being interested in travel, I have also done a short foreign exchange via my school)

2 internships, one at a travel agency, one at a bank

5 day Economics course at National University, Singapore

won 2nd place during an inter school team business competition

No competitive sports due to eye problems (which forms the basis for the first half of my CommonApp essay)

Are you full pay or will you need financial aid?
(That’s typically the #1 criterion for international students, since most universities are need-aware, even the “meet need” ones).

Is it even possible for int’l students to apply for need based aid (given the FAFSA needs to be filled and I don’t have a SSN)? But no- I am not. However I am interested in merit based scholarships.

Yes, it’s possible to apply for financial aid as an international student, you use CSS Profile or the ISFAA.

If you’re not applying for financial aid, just merit aid, your odds improve dramatically; that, truly, is the key element in international admissions.

You’re in at Bentley, Santa Clara, and Rollins, and with merit.
Odds are good for you at Northeastern, too, and with merit since it’s based on IB score + TOEFL, not SAT score.
UChicago: will depend on your essays, but your odds are probably even with other internationals, 1 in 20 or so.
You’re in at UToronto since your amazing IB score is all they’ll need or see.
UVA and McKenna are reaches for everyone and they’re a reach for you too. :)
