Is not being in the top 5% of your class a dealbreaker? Looking at their website, the statistics indicate that only 6% of people in the second top 5% get admitted, and only 4% of students in the second decile are admitted.

Holy crap! Is this something that is overcomable if you aren't recruited or have legacy, etc?

(I'm in the top 7% BTW, so it seems that alone gives me a 6% chance...or less b/c i'm applying Wharton).

Do you go to a large public school where not everyone or smart? or do you go to a small private school with select, intelligent kids? The latter is better for you if you’re in the top 7%.

penn probably won’t base the desicion solely off of your 7% rank, they look at other stuff too. but if you don’t have anything other special (are you an URM besides asian?) then your chances are lower, but it is still possible.

Well it is a public school of around 360 seniors.

We definitely send more than just the top 5% to top schools, but it seems that Penn is specifically looking for that. Last year however, one kid with the exact same GPA as me got in, but of course he had legacy.

I am “unhooked”. Hopefully the other parts of my app can make up for that definciency, but if this can’t be done, then oh well.

From my school (large public, rich area, good school,) 6 kids got into Penn last year and 2 were outside the top 5% (with a bunch in the top 5% rejected) but both were ED legacies.
