I'm almost heading into 10th grade. During my freshman year, I HARDLY got involved in activities because there were no clubs that I liked. I did very little community service(about 12 hours) and all my friends have over 40 hours of community service. I am SO BEHIND and I'm worried. I do plan to be determined this time to get involved a lot more in extra curricular activities and do more community service.

Now I have a question. Will this hurt my chances into getting into a good school? I'm aiming for Cornell University, but I feel that since I messed up real badly in ECs for freshman year, I might hurt my chances to get in. Now don't get me wrong, I got straight As for freshman year, but it is my ECs that I REALLY need to improve on.

** Please tell me! Will my chances to get into a good college diminish because I didn't get involved in ECs during freshman year? **

Hey it’s all right. I didn’t do much my freshman and sophomore years either besides two sports (no clubs, volunteering, that sort of thing). You just need to step it up and find a true passion. That way you will have something to write about on the college application. But it’s hardly tr end of the world.

They will diminish… Ever so slightly, but not too much–maybe you can’t work up your way to international president of a club but that’s about it. But you still have plenty of time for leadership positions and working hard in service. At some point in Junior year I say is too late.

I wouldn’t worry about it at all. I didn’t do much my freshman year either, but I got involved later and now I’m the president and an international finalist in my club. Just make sure you get involved as a sophomore and you’ll be fine.

You still have three more years of high school, relax.

It’a okay. The same thing happened with me: I had just moved to a new area for 9th grade and was too stubborn to really do anything outside of school. =p

Freshman Year is a pivotal year.Every last thing is different from your previous middle school. University’s understand that lol.

Thank you for your responses! I really appreciate it!
