Hi,
I have been in JV/Varsity tennis in my high school since freshman and I put down that I plan to continue to play varsity tennis in the common app. We have a new coach and I worry what happens if I couldn’t make the varsity team this year. Do I have to notify my plan changes to the colleges? thanks.
Unless you are a recruited athlete (which doesn’t sound like the case) nobody will care if you play JV or V tennis. There is no need to notify colleges if you do not make varsity
Our school shows sports on the transcript, if I get kicked out from Varsity, my senior year transcript won’t have the “Varsity Tennis” in it, but in the common app, I put down “Varsity Tennis” as my planned class. So I worry if that is a course change that I should report to the colleges.
thanks!
I wonder what other people would do in a situation like that, because it could happen that someone in senior year was not able to get into the varsity team, even this person was in varsity team in junior year.
Why don’t you wait to see what happens? Here, if you don’t make V as a senior, you are offered a manager position in which case – you’re still “on” the team. Try not to worry about it unless it actually happens.
I wouldn’t worry about a what if.
I don’t think this is a big deal. You “assumed” you will be asked to continue and hopefully you will be.
If you fall off and you applied to a private or elite public, you can email the admissions officer if you’re that concerned and say, I put tennis on my common app because I played three years and assumed I’d make the team this year. But I was cut and wanted to make you aware. Thank you.
You don’t need to - but if you want to.
It’s not going to matter.
If you’re going to a regular public - let’s say not one of the top 10 - or one that bases acceptances on grades/sats only, it won’t matter.
I really think it’s a non-issue = but i’m sure you’ll make the team and it won’t matter anyway!!!
This is a case of getting psyched up for no reason.
Agree…I would not do anything until you are certain you don’t make the varsity team (hopefully you will).
IF you don’t make the varsity team you can always send a brief email to admissions officers and let them know you did not make the varsity tennis team but you will play JV tennis (or whatever you plan to do) instead. You can also add a sentence reaffirming your interest in the school.
I can’t imagine it will make any difference in your college admissions.
Are sports a graded class at your high school? Normally you wouldn’t put a sport as a class on an application.
our transcript shows the sports, but our academic GPA calculation excludes PE/Sports classes. I put it on the application because it’s on my transcript.
thanks!
