Not Many School-Related ECs

I just want an honest opinion on how this looks. Because I'm very involved in activities that are outside of school, I do not have the time to join many clubs, and consequently, I do not have much leadership in school. The only real club I'm in is the school newspaper, which I'm news editor of, and hope to be editor-in-chief next year.

How will colleges look at this? What are your impressions when looking at an applicant like me?

bump......

What are your out-of-school ECs?

As long as you have EC's, I don't think it matters if they're school related or not. Just make sure that you show commitment to those that you participate in and I'm sure you'll be fine; admissions people want to see involvment, but it certainly doesn't HAVE to be related to school. Don't worry too much. And by the way, I'm the news editor of the paper at my school too ^_^

lavendercloud, I do several things but mostly table tennis. I am nationally ranked for my age and a junior olympic gold medalist. I also play the piano, in which I passed the abrsm exam for grade 8 with merit along with a bunch of other awards...selected to play at Carnegie Hall, Shanghai grande theatre, etc.

Many of you will say that what I have is impressive, but I'm worried that colleges will think I wasn't active enough in school.

can`t the activities you do outside of school be part of your ECs?

The colleges are looking for your passion...in your case, table tennis. It does not matter if this is within your educational institution or not. Your national rank in table tennis will be viewed far more favorably than being e.g., treasurer of Key Club. Are you being recruited as an athlete?

As far as I know, colleges do not "recruit" for table tennis. Many colleges have teams, and I will definitely play in college. Maybe in the future, it will be more widely recognized in the US, but for now, there are no table tennis scholarships.

You're obviously passionate - no, they will NOT care whether it has to do with school or not.

And if I ever see the table tennis junior Olympics on TV (is it broadcasted?) I will watch for you! ;)

Haha, unfortunately, they do not. In the US, they don't even broadcast the actual olympics for table tennis. All you see is the killerspin stuff on espn sometimes.

you're fine. i would worry more if your title was "Not Many ECs"
