not only...but also?

If I see "not only... but", is it an error. I always thought "also" was required, but today I was told that "also" doesn't always have to be there.

Is this true?

In modern written English “not only … but” (without the also) is acceptable usage. I doubt that the College Board would provide two choices which differed only with “but” versus “but also”. If they do, pick the “but also”.

See for example: [Grammar Girl : Not Only But Also :: Quick and Dirty Tips ?](http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/not-only-but-also.aspx)

thanks @fogcity!

Ok, thanks for the help.

I was thinking more about identifying errors, not improving sentences.
