<p>Good question! I’ve wondered the same thing. It turns out there should NEVER be a comma unless a subordinate clause precedes the “but.”</p>
<p>Examples:
I like not only pizza but also pasta (no comma)
Like not only pizza, which comes from Italy, but also…</p>
