I have passed all of my AP exams so far except for one, on which I received a 2. I'm a senior and will be applying to colleges soon. Does not passing one AP affect your college admission chances at top-rank schools? Do they even know about your AP scores, or only what you tell them? I plan on re-taking that AP test so I can get college credit, but by then admissions will be over. Does anybody know anything about this? Thanks.

I don’t know any college that required AP scores. Just don’t send it and don’t worry about it.

They only know about it if you requested the score be sent to specific colleges. My son didn’t pass the Spanish AP so he quickly found a place to take a CLEP test. These tests are offered and accepted at most universities. Based on his CLEP score, he was able to get 3 college credits in Spanish, and just barely missed getting 6 credits. Hence, he would say CLEP tests are easier than AP tests.

Don’t worry about one 2. I’ve known people who have gotten into Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Georgia Tech, UVa, etc with more than one failed AP exam that they sent to the colleges.

You don’t pass or fail AP exams.

AP Exam scores are reported on a 5-point scale as follows:

5 Extremely well qualified*
4 Well qualified*
3 Qualified*
2 Possibly qualified*
1 No recommendation**

Qualified to receive college credit or advanced placement
*No recommendation to receive college credit or advanced placement

Thanks for the input. Also, about the post above, I thought only a score of 3 or better can merit college credit. Oh well. I think I will retake it anyway.

A few really really really poor quality colleges will offer some limited advanced placement for a 2.

You can cancel your scores.
