Has anyone else been in the situation where you say Penn and people assume you mean Penn State? Once at my job a customer asked where I was applying and I said Penn and she said, “Oh yeah, Penn State is really hard to get into now. Especially main campus.” I was going to correct her and say I mean the University of Pennsylvania but I felt bad…so has anyone else been in situations like this?

if you search, we've ALL had that problem... they even had shirts that say "I go to the REAL penn"

I saw a shirt that said "Not Penn State" and that's what gave me the idea for the thread.

totally i get it allll the time

I'm applying to UPenn AND Penn State. Let's just say it leads to quite a bit of confusion when I'm rattling off my list of schools I'm applying to: 'Didnt you already SAY that one?'

my mom even keeps mixing them up.

i don't get what's so hard about it....even before i was interested in penn i knew the difference....no one refers to penn state as penn....but when you say penn...some people think penn state

Yeh, Being from PA I may have a leg up. Penn State is not Penn. I've gotten people to mess that up before, and I makes me feel bad. But, at least it isn't people mixing up Kenyon and Kenya. They even have shirts at Kenyon (Which is actually in Ohio) that say "Not near Uganda"

I wouldn't let this bother me at all. Maybe it's because I'm from PA also, and some of the top kids choose Penn State for the Schreyer Honors Program. And Penn State is a darn good state school anyway, and lots of people go there to save on tuition and get a great education. But still, for employers and grad schools, there is no confusion here.

"not near uganda"....freakin awesome. see, now that's clever

"not penn state" is just too easy

Penn isn't the only school with this problem. Wellesley is always confused with Wesleyan and people think Washington University is a state school, too, to name just two examples!!

yeah, they also think it's in washington. either one

the secretary who actually contacted me for my interview left a message on my answering machine saying she wanted to schedule an interview for Penn State.. good thing i was aware of how ignorant some people are, or else i would have deleted that message and never called her back for my interview =P

My English teacher (a great guy, but a little flaky at times) addressed the first draft of my recommendation to Penn State.

Luckily, he let me read the rec and I steered him onto the right path.

My sister goes to Dartmouth and here in MA everyone assumes it's UMass -Dartmouth. Same thing happens with Amherst and UMass -Amherst, sometimes.

yea... same at my school.. wat town do you live in?

i went to a college presentation for duke, yale, harvard, and penn, and my friend's dad kept calling it penn state the whole time... even after the talk. oh well, it's not really a big deal, right? and about that presentation, i felt quite out of place. these schools are all so intimidating. aah.

aww crap. i was supposed to go to that, but skipped it cuz it was on a Monday night, the night after prom. they won't know that in the admit office will they?

ppl also confuse wesleyan with ohio wesleyan, that happened to my friend.

who cares, just because someone thinks its not prestigious doesnt make it less so. who cares about what random people think, its only important that wherever your trying to get a job knows the diff.
