Not "Popular" Enough?

What if I can't get any leadership positions in clubs just because I'm not popular enough. At my school the popular kids get everything, I'm not trying to complain here, but it's not my fault if I don't hang with the popular kids crowd. Everything is a big popularity contest in high school. Then again, how else would they do things? Point is I don't want Colleges to look down on my application because I can't get leadership positions, and it's not even my fault. I don't know what to do.

I know a lot of kids that have gone to great colleges without leadership positions.

If possible, try and find another way to show leadership.Start a toy/food/whatever drive, or some other volunteering project. :)

Yeah because no one will vote for me but my friends.

OREGON!!!! Wot school in oregon?
Goto some nerdy clubs and then try to be ruler. MAke a club.
Join link crew, anyone whos got farily good acdemic credantials 3.0+ and shows commitment can get in. Shows leadership by hwlping out freshmen.

I sympathise. I'm fairly popular, especially in the music department, which makes up about 1/3 of the school... unfortunately, when I ran for senior class secretary, the other candidate was a jock and had more people vote for her.

Of course, my speech was also "I'll be a good secretary because I'm a woman"... that may have had something to do with it.

I go to South Salem High School. And ChellyBelly, Jocks the majority of the time will win. I had a bad experience where I made a good speech and actually was serious about the position, and then a more popular girl just laughed and goofed off and bribed people in her speech and she got all the votes. Kinda makes me wonder why I always get the crappy end of the stick.

I've had issues with this in the past.

Take comfort in the fact that once you get into the real world (Or heck, even college), she won't be able to lean on her popularity anymore. It will come down to WHAT you know instead of WHO (with a few exceptions of course).

I don't know, I want to run for these positions still, but I think I'm going to wait until everyone has their turn already, so most competition will be out of the way. There are other ways to show leadership than have people vote for you, just have to remember that.

I've ran for numerous positions, though at my school there is no campaigning, just voting. I did manage to get VP of the class sophomore year, but my class has still had the same president since 7th grade, and I'm a junior now. That makes this his 5th consecutive year.

Personally, I would not vote for you from what I know now. 1) The only reason you want leadership positions is for college, you don't even mention a specific club, which I interpret as you don't really love the club, and want it for all the wrong reasons. 2)You whine and feel bad for yourself and make excuses.

(Wo)Man up. That's how life works.

Well colege, if you saw the other candidates, you would not want to vote for them either, much less them anyhow, and who are you to tell me that I don't love the club. Don't come to my topic to make a big stink. Keep it to yourself. And I could care less what you think.

JBVirtuoso- Wow, since 7th grade? Does your school allow people to run again, or does this person just automatically stay in their position year after year?

Random but I go to Salem High School too... Just on the other side of the country lol.

Oh and don't worry about not having leadership positions. Like they've suggested you might want to start your own club OR try looking for leadership roles OUTSIDE of school. Like with local sports or something.

No, this person has been reelected every year. But "elected" is kind of misleading. The way it works is this: They take nominations for maybe 3 or 4 candidates. Then they send the candidates into the hall while everyone else votes. Then they have a president.

The other class offices have been filled by the same half dozen or so people since 7th grade. I'm not really sure why, but it just sort of happens that way.

I understand completely. I've switched schools a lot and now the people have been in office since 7th grade. In my grade basically, no one even runs any more. The 4-6 people sign up, then they get it. If more people sign up you just vote and usually the voting is fixed so. It sucks, but.

So the same people get it every year? I think new people should get a chance every year.

Yea.. That's how they FINALLY changed it for Homecoming. Because the same people had been picked every year so they changed it to where new people are picked every year for Underclassmen, and any one can be on it for Senior Year.. Otherwise it would be the same people hands down every fall

^^^^Good, that's a lot more fair. I almost wish positions would be chosen a little more accordingly. I don't know how it would work if it wasn't by popular vote, but by best all around ability/ presentation.

The whole voting process is all based on popularity at my school. Luckily, there are a bajillion clubs so there are a lot of opportunities to run for office.

If you really are desperate for a leadership position, just form your own club like a couple of my classmates did. Resume whores.... haha

Leadership is not actually a pre-requisite for anything... Just try your best, or make your own club.
