Not Recruited, But Close.

Okay, at a selective school (I won't name which one), I asked the Track and Field coach about recruiting times and distances. He said I must throw a 44' in shotput to be recruited, but the university's record is about a 42' (which is lower than my HS's). Will noting this in my application help admissions? Should I talk to the coach and see what options there are? I know there are at most 3 field athletes (includes all throwing, jumpers, pole vaulters) so very possible only 1 female thrower. What do you suggest?

Well, what do you throw? A 44'? Because that is what the coach said you need to throw to be recruited, which is strange if the record at the school is 2 feet less. It sounds like the coach was very direct, but if you throw 44', by all means contact the coach directly and ask if he has any interest in having you on the team next year. If the coach has not gone to admissions with his recommendation/request, then mentioning your athletic prowess in your essay is not likely to help you get in. Check with this coach and then check with a couple of back up schools where your throwing and size are equal to the current members of their T&F team. Good luck.

Thanks. I don't have a 44'. So I guess I'll contact the coach a little later. Another problem is track is a spring sport so no more marks until late march. But since I'm doing indoor track, I'll probably contact coach in January after first meet.
