Not sending AP scores to avoid becoming a U1

Hi,

I have had friends going from my school and testifying that our teachers ARE ****… Basically, they were expected to know things they didn’t, and thus their GPA suffered, they studied all day to play catch up and still ended up suffering. I also do not want to be thrust into new material, I want to discover the city, get acquainted with the system and the country.

Thank you;;

So anyways, I have 31 credits, but a bunch are for irrelevents things such as Economics and Language, also I can not get credit for Math 141 and Physics. Will I get bumped into U1 ?

So I think your question is not that you are going to be bumped or not, but instead what kind of classes are you going to be taking next year? Do you have to skip all those introductory math and science courses or not? If you passed all those AP courses, it is clear that McGill won’t let you take Freshman Calculus, Physics or Chemistry again.

Maybe make sure you have some easier classes to begin with and mix in only one or two advanced classes if you have to skip all those classes that are equivalent to your AP courses???

Definitely. The only downside I can see is the housing situation (I think U0 have higher priority/are assured of housing?).

As others have mentioned though, you can always take 4 courses/term (the minimum to be a full-time student) and graduate in four years. You’re actually in a better position as well since you’ll get earlier priority when choosing courses next year. Plus, in McGill’s eyes you’re still considered a [“First-Year” (even incoming transfer students are included) so you still get invited to all the freshman orientations/events/etc.

There is this one thing you should keep in mind: Time and Credit Limit for Completion of Degree | Programs, Courses and University Regulations - McGill University](Get Ready! - McGill University)

Each faculty has their own regulations. Essentially though, once you’re in U1, you have a limit of eight semesters (4 years) to finish your degree. If you start in U0, you technically could stay for 5 years.

As an American coming in to the Desautels Faculty of Management as a U1 student thanks to AP credits I have to say that McGill’s policy for granting AP Credit is very generous and saves you time, money and stress while giving you more flexibility towards your program.

Many students here do four classes/semester a year and stay for four years, which allows for a reduced course load (that’s one less final per semester! ) and more time to get involved. For example, thanks to my lighter course load I was able to work part time at McGill while maintaining excellent marks and having a relatively good social life (aka going to St. Laurent too often-you’ll learn about St. Laurent your freshman year).

The magical number of credits is 24, afterwards you become U1 which allows you priority registration over U0 students. It also allows you to take courses in your declared major. For management students this means avoiding BUSA classes that are solely for U0’s which is a huge perk.

As to the general concern about retaking an AP class and getting better marks while good marks are quite tough to come by, putting a consistent effort and maybe if you’re lucky, taking some bird classes will help tremendously with your GPA.

What happens if I don’t get a 4 or 5 on my AP exam?

Like I get a 3 or lower.

On my minerva it asks for my AP scores to be sent, and i’ll obviously have to send them.

But will this have any affect on my college acceptance, aside from the fact that I won’t be starting as a U1 student? Like will they deny me after the see my low scores? ( I already accepted the offer and paid $300)

As I understand it, AP test scores are not considered for admissions, only for class credit.

Like Sparkypoo said, what if I get a 3 on my exams?

I don’t have enough credits to become U1 but I’m probably taking a gap year and my credits carry over and I really don’t want to start in second year level classes.

Is it a bad idea to make myself get 3’s so I can retake those classes? I would be getting 3’s on 4 exams, would McGill rescind my acceptance or do anything about it?
