NOt so smart people at CU

I visited CU and only saw a few (2-3 smart people) most people were CC/Barnard ppl who liked to intoxicate themselves.

um.....who are you to judge intelligence? what credentials do you have? any?

also,it seems you have something against drinking, dont let someone's personal habits cloud your judgement as to their IQ

Being smart and liking to intoxcate yourself aren't mutually exclusive. Other than the fact that alcohol kills a few brain cells, there isn't a problem here.

And how did you SEE 2-3 smart people? Do they wear signs on their shirts saying "I'm a smart people."

Please allow me to place it this way.

I stayed/hang around people. They seemed arrogrant, and very proud of the fact that they can throw parties. I can be tolerant of that. No worries.

I saw a few grad students that were interested in doing something substaintial with science and technology-and since that is my area of interest, I was naturally attracted to that only.

so you are judging a whole school with undergrad population of ~5000 (CC+SEAS) on some people who you "stayed/hang around"?? i am just guessing that you stayed for a day or so and i'm curious as to how many of those people you could possibly have met

They're grad students. They probably also "like[] to intoxicate themselves," but you just don't see them socializing w/ undergrads.

So who said they're not smart? Who said they're not interested in "doing something substantial"?

one thing i've learned over the past few months is that is is /impossible/ to measure someone's intelligence by looking at them or even talking to them. you'd be surprised.

one girl i know is the absolute biggest ditz in the whole wide world but she is an absolute monster at physics O_o

haha, exactly! sometimes you think "wow, how did THEY get a better grade on that test than me?" because you think intellectual smarts resembles social smarts.

yuppp i am living proof of that . . i had a mom come up to me (trying to compliment me) and say " i think its soo awesome that everyone thinks ur a complete idiot . . but really your not" i was liek ummm . . thanks . . . everyone here (including my parents) are calling me legally blonde now . . because im going to an ivy . . . so personality and appearance have no relevance to how smart you are

hard to believe but it's true

Think about it logically. Which sort of student is going to want to take in a high school student for a night.

Is it
A) The super intelligent guy doing important research
or
B) The social people who like to hang out

The correct answer, most certainly, is B. The people who would sign up to hang out with you are extroverted. You sound introverted. That has nothing to do with whether or not people at Columbia are smart.

yeah, there'll be plenty of stuffy little bookworms like you, don't worry :D the crucial difference is that when the time comes, you will be one of those closeted eggheads enhancing his knowledge so he can one day change the world (but lacking the social skills or interest to want to host a student), and in the meantime some random frat boys will snap up the prospectives because getting pre-frosh drunk sounds like a fun night to them.

this thread is dead, let it stay that way

For better or worse, the future leaders of America (corporate and government) are likely to be guys who partied their way to an Ivy league degree. That type of person has social skills yet is "smart enough."

i totally concur
