Not sure if I should apply...

Is Tulane a big party school? I mean I would like a party here and there, but I also would like to do more with my life than drinking and partying.

I guess I just have that stereotype since its in New Orleans...Is that true or am I totally wrong? I have heard great things about Tulane but that's the only thing I'm worried about!

Yes, Tulane is a party school. I think the partying atmosphere is different at Tulane than at many state schools or other places. I think the partying reputation might take over because it is a small school and pretty much everyone who goes out knows each other. The academics are very good. I would not describe myself as a big time partier but i do go out regularly. But i managed my time well and took 38 credits, a very heavy course load, as a freshmen and did well.

In general, I would say that Tulane is the type of school that you have to visit to know if it is for you or not.

I agree with ibc90, you won’t know if it’s the school for you until you visit.

That being said, what’s the harm in applying? It’s still free and rather simple, isn’t it?? Especially if you get the personal application. I am certainly not a big time partier (though I do like to have fun and enjoy going out once in a while). Basically what I’m trying to say is basing a decision on whether or not to apply based on a reputation is crazy. There are plenty of other factors involved in your college decision.

There will be partying at ANY school, but it doesn’t have to define your social life. There will always be others that don’t want to party. Tulane students are great at putting everything in perspective. They balance their academics with their fun. At Tulane you’ll certainly be able to do more with your life then just “drinking and partying” i promise you.

Did you say “it’s free”? If it’s free, I’ll definately apply. I couldn’t find the fee on the website.

I’m not sure how much of a party school Tulane is. I do agree that it has more opportunities to party than almost any other school given it’s location in New Orleans, but there aren’t excessive amount of parties near campus. At schools like UMich and others, there are going to be more “in-escapable” parties at near campus dwellings that are a distraction versus TU where people tend to go out more. At least, that was my experience there.

It was very easy to get to the french quarter and even easier to make runs to bars uptown but in terms of “on campus or just off campus” parties, I think that reputation is grossly overblown for Tulane. Students that are successful balance academics and fun, as ellie mentioned.

You should really visit both New Orleans and Tulane to see if you like it. Best of Luck!

The party scene at Tulane is different than the party scene at other schools because New Orleans has such a great and diverse bar scene. You don’t have to be a frat party kind of person to find a niche at Tulane. I would say definately apply and if accepted DEFINATELY visit. That was what got me!
