I am currently in cc getting my degree to transfer to a state university. My first semester there i got a 3.0 gpa (which i knew I could improve next semester). Then during my second semester 3 of my co-workers quit causing me to have to work 60-65+ hours a week. I tried to find time to study but I would keep falling asleep. I am currently sitting at around a 2.0 gpa and I dont think even if I got a 3.5 the next two semesters that my gpa would be good enough to transfer. I finally got my work hours down to 40 but not sure if I should even put the money into two more semesters if ive already screwed myself over. Any advice would be helpful.
I understand where you are coming from, during my second year at a community college I was working 40 hours a week during finals time. It gets very tough and but there is a way to deal with it. If working 40 hours is an absolute must in order to survive, then obviously stay where you’re at with work. However, if you are living at home with your parents and you have some wiggle room I would definitely talk to them about the possibility of more help with money so you can reduce your work hours. Also, set up a study schedule. I know it sounds kind of lame but it works, and it keeps you from freaking out last minute before a test. Basically, evaluate your work schedule and during whatever free time you have, make an actual schedule stating what chapters you are going to read at what times, what homework you are going to do, and so on. Writing this down and having it in front of you definitely helps.
And one more thing, if you’re struggling with understanding a concept or section, talk to the professor. Sometimes having them explain it to you one-on-one helps a great deal. The great thing about community colleges is that you are put in smaller classes where you can actually discuss things with the professor during office hours, as opposed to not getting that time while you are at a university with large classes.
