Not taking a science course senior year = bad idea?

Science is my worst subject. I went from advanced earth science (freshman year) to honors biology (sophomore year), in which I earned a D as a final grade so my teacher made me move down to standard chem for junior year (now).

Yes. Horrible. I know.

Would my transcript look even worse if I don't take a science next year, but triple up on history instead? (I want to major in International Relations or political science and I love history in general.)

Hypothetical senior year schedule :
AP Calculus
AP Lit
AP French V or AP Latin V (haven't decided yet, though most likely French)
AP Govt and Polit
AP Mod Europe
Honors Philosophy
Honors Choir
Honors Indep. Art Fashion Design

Self-Study Macro/Micro Economics

I'm in my sixth and last year of chinese school - taking the SAT II for it in May? (or April if I'm ready)

Well...I'm nervous. All the "smart kids" at my school are doubling up on science courses this year and next. And most of my friends advised me not to drop science but I hate it so much. I don't care about ATP, chemical equations, or what the molar mass of iodine is.

Comments? Criticism? Advice?

Mucho appreciated.

Read "A is for Admissions", the author talks about so many math/science combos and not so many social/english ones....interesting....

What colleges are you interested in? What does your counselur think? My daughter hates science as well....for senior year she is hoping to take astronomy....you have taken science, but what is you average this year? Did you in any way redeem yourself?

"Did you in any way redeem yourself?"

Hope so. High honor roll first term and am most likely on it this term too. 3.6 GPA - After that D, straight As are preferable from now on. I'm aiming for a 1400+ SAT. As for activites : Secretary-General of Model United Nations, art club treasurer, Alliance Against Racism executive member, and 120+ hours of volunteer work as a counselor at a Summer Camp. Also applying for some summer internship jobs related to international relations.

Darn...so they would rather see me take another science course and do poorly rather excel in an extra history course?

I think you should try science again. First, to prove to colleges that you can do it, and also because you will probably need to take some science in college. If it is really hard for you, consider hiring a tutor or asking your teacher for extra help. Even if you hate science, you will be more well rounded academically after taking it. Good luck!

NOOOO, that there were tooooo many science math combos, not enough of the other!!!! So take the easiest science you can get away with, it'll be there and the other strong subjects.....check with your ideal college and see what they want, that should help you decide.....if they just want three years of science, then YEAH, if not, you have to make a decision....

I am in the exact same situation... I absolutely abhor and disdain science but love history. I got an A+ in bio, B- in chem honors (ugghh, horrible teacher and unfair grading, long story), and I've had to drop physics honors to go down to regular... I know, I suck. My gc said it was fine, as long as I made it clear I wanted to major in something in the humanities and did very well in my classes. I'm looking at small LAC's... Williams, Swarthmore, and Pomona are my dream schools (haha, fat chance). Next year I'm taking Euro AP, English 12 AP, Music Theory AP, Psych AP, Stat AP, highest level of German offered, and advanced Chamber Choir. Talk to your gc; that's what I'm doing.

do what you find a passion in. Just try and stay rounded for most colleges (ie slightly easier AP science like Bio or Chem or Enviro, depending on your strengths.

I'm a science kid, it's my senior year, i'm taking AP chem and AP physics B.

My general suggestion: challenge yourself.

do you have any science electives? here we have bio and earth science electives that aren't very difficult at all (astronomy, oceanography, meteorology, geology, genetics, mcb, zoology, and botany). I'd recommend trying another year of science in something easier that you could potentially find interesting. If you don't have science electives, I might recommend physics since you're in ap calc (I'm assuming you get math relatively easily). physics is pretty straight-forward, just memorizing a few equations and then applying them.

As of now, I'm also planning on dropping science next (senior) year. Honestly, I don't care what colleges think about it. If a college isn't going to take me solely because I've "only" taken 3 years of science (with one AP), screw them. I'd much rather take something I'm interested in.
