Not taking organic chemistry before transfer?

I want to be a biology major and I'll be applying to a couple UC's including Cal and UCLA. On ASSIST, organic chemistry is one of the lower division classes but not a pre-req for most of the UC's. I would really rather take it at the school I transfer to since I can't fit it into my schedule and for a couple of other reasons, but I don't know if I'll still stand a chance at getting in to some of the more competitive schools if i don't complete it at a CC :/ What do you guys think? Thanks in advance!

You might not get into the competitive UC’s then. If you don’t care then do it. If you do care then I would try to take it. You can always try apply without it and if you don’t get in the schools you wanted then reapply next cycle.

I don’t think you will get the answer you want telling us you can’t take it. Expect it to be an answer that makes you worse off then taking it.

Well I can take it if I spend another year at a CC. It’s just that I would prefer to leave in 2 years and so I was curious if anyone has been admitted to any competitive schools without previously taking it.

Apply to biochemistry. It doesn’t have a minimum requirements like biology because it is in the chemistry department.

Or just apply as another major. It doesn’t have to be bio related of med/pharm school.

I’ve already replied to some of your school stuff but I would really recommend completing it but not at the expense of staying a third year. I do know about 10 people that were accepted to UCSB, UCD, UCSD, UCI and UCLA as bio (or related) majors with only one semester of Ochem but they were also strong students overall. If you have TAG/TAP for somewhere, you shouldn’t have a problem though. I only know of about 5 people that were accepted to Cal in bio or something related and they all had completed Ochem but that’s not to say it indicates anything. Cal admits students by college, not major, so you could apply to any major in L&S that you complete the requirements for and then declare MCB or IB. I would be careful applying to other majors since bio is often impacted especially if you TAG SD since they end up admitting a lot of bio students as undeclared.

Yes, I’m sorry I have been spamming with all of these o-chem posts. It’s just ending up to be a pain in the arse for me. I actually want to apply to the College of Chemistry at Berkeley and major with Chemical Biology if I were to get in.

Not taking your ochem courses would set you one year behind at Berkeley, meaning you will likely have to stay for more than four semesters. Berkeley highly frowns upon this, even for nontransfers who want to petition for a fifth year of study.

Gosh damn. I guess I really don’t have much of a choice if I’m to get into Cal. Organic Chemistry is my arch nemesis at the moment.

I got accepted into Davis on TAG, without Ochem as a Biological Sciences major

Thats davis, he wants to UCLA that specifically says the minimum of 1 quarter of o-chem and UCB that specifically says 1 year of o-chem.

Just follow my advice and apply to majors in the chemistry department.
UCB: Chem Bio says the minimum is:

CHEMISTRY 1A + 1B
MATH 1A + 1B
PHYSICS 7A or 8A
ENGLISH R1A + R1B

Thats g-chem and 1 semester of physics.

UCLA: Biochemistry
It doesn’t even have a minimum requirement.

Bio department majors for both UCLA and UCB have a minimum requirements that include o-chem.

Yes, I actually go to Davis and know that it is quite lenient about allowing students to stay for a 5th year. The problem is that I heard from students as well as my Berkeley admissions officer (I am transferring there) that Berkeley is not. Perhaps someone actually from there can attest to this?

If it is possible, you should start at least the first course during the spring before transfer and perhaps try to finish the rest during summer.

Actually, you don’t even need organic chemistry as a pre-requisite to transfer into the chemical biology major, even though it is recommended to take more chemistry courses. However, this may put you at a disadvantage since most other applicants will probably complete their ochem series before transfer. If it makes you feel better, I am transferring from Davis to Berkeley as a chemical biology major even though I am missing the third quarter of my ochem class (although two quarters of ochem looks better than none).

I’m Chem Bio too and I have orientation on Thursday so I’ll ask some other transfers if they completed Ochem already.

@Rigoletto Are you going to orientation on the 9th?

@killmyentourage: Yes I am.

Hey for what it’s worth, my ASSIST.com articulation agreement thing said that I needed 1 year of O-chem to transfer but I didn’t take any O-chem. Or any of the 3 semesters of physics needed and I managed to transfer in 2 years to UCD. I also got into my other 2 choices; Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara.

Hey did u do one year of non physics major ???

So u just did 1 year of general chem one year of general bio and one year of calculus and got in ???

The first reply was for gomiamidolphins and second was for tymhill
