Not that it really even matters at this point...

It seems like a waste of energy to bother asking, and it's out of my hands now, but I'm curious what people think of my chances of getting into McGill are. Mainly I'm just anxiously awaiting a decision (like everyone else) and am trying to think positively, so feel free to lie if necessary to make me feel better. I'm applying to engineering and science, which are unfortunately the two hardest schools to get into. Also, I'm a US applicant.

GPA: 3.6 unweighted for grades 9-11, but I did bad in 9th grade so maybe a smidge higher (since they don't look at freshman year). So far I have like a 3.7/3.8 for 12th grade midyear. My school doesn't weight grades so I don't know what they'd be. It also doesn't rank, because it's a small class and "very competitive" (I realize this sounds like a broken record by this point. Besides, this is just an euphemism for "my guidance counselors are too lazy to weight grades").

SAT I: 690M, 630R, 740W

ACT: Comp-29, Eng-30, Math-27, Reading-27, Science-31, Essay-10, Combined English-30

I can play the first 12 bars of Stairway to Heaven AND the chorus. Sometimes when I get a sore throat I sound like Robert Plant.

SAT II: 640 Bio, 590 Chem, 600 French, 680 Math I
(I took chem as a sophmore and had to take the SATII a couple months ago. I wonder if they'll sympathize at all? Yeah, I didn't think so either.)

As far as courses go, I took AP Bio last year, and I am taking AP English, AP Calc, and AP Stat this year. I got a 4 on the bio test. All my other classes are honors level, with some non-honors courses like journalism and expository writing.

I also have a pretty decent hockey mullet, so I'm hoping that will win me some brownie points with the Canadians.

I'm kind of ****ed it's so hard to get into engineering/science, but that's what I want to do so it's pointless to apply to another school. Communications doesn't "float my boat."

My self-esteem-crushing Minerva status is "Further Review Required" if that means anything. Hopefully the $20 bill I taped to my transcript will come through for me.

Thanks!

Unfortunately your 590 Chem SAT II may kill you. I had a 570 and got rejected when I applied out of HS. They have automatic cutoffs for scores, though 590 may be the cutoff I don't remember. Good luck!

Yeah the cutoff is 580... not that a 590 is passing with flying colors. I wonder if they actually compare students based on SATII scores, or if they simply check to make sure that you're within a preset range?

It really was unfortunate about the chem though... I found out 4 days before the SAT IIs that I needed a chem for McGill. Relearning chemistry in that time didn't work out as planned. That being said, I'm pretty sure the chem SAT II is impossible even if you DO know chemistry well.

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately, McGill along with other Canadian universities employ cutoffs, so if certain stats of urs falls below a certain range you are automatically rejected. Unfortunately this is how it works at a lot of Canadian Us especially at McGill, they're not as holistic as American schools.

Good to know!

Well I meet the minimum requirements, I'm sure of that. I'm not exactly sure how to interpret that. I kind of wish I had applied to Arts and then just transferred. It looks like I would have had a much easier time.

I think "Further Review Required" means that we weren't a slam dunk and they want midterm grades before running the formula again.

Would it be possible to request a switch in admissions request to Arts?

momfromme: You can call admissions and do this. My d. had a friend who did
not get into either of her two choices, called admissions and was told she could choose another fac and be admitted. She did, and has since transferred into her first choice.
