Is it possible to even get into Rice without having a billion ECs?

of course it is

..........

people don't understand quality outdoes quantity.,

Yeah well...

I had the post-secondary counselor at my school strongly hint that I shouldn't bother trying for admission at schools or apply for scholarships because of only a couple extra-curriculars and a few B's.

I was just wondering. :|

it's not necessarily about how many EC's, but how deeply involved you get (accomplishments, leadership positions) and sometimes how unusual they are. you just need to be deeply interested in a few things. you likely still have time to develop these if you are a sophomore or junior.

i got in ID and i definitely have less ecs than a lot of people...i mean if you were consistent and stuck with those ecs for a few years that looks a lot better than doing a billion ecs that dont actually mean anything to you. also, a few bs probably wont be the difference between getting in or not, they look at a lot of stuff.

oatmeal. NEVER listen to counslers because most of the time they are ignorant fools. I got into rice with a 3.5 UW GPA and about 9 EC's total (only 5 that I did all of HS though). I dedicate about 10-20 hrs a week to my EC's. My courseload made my GPA reasonable, but the point is that a few B's will not disqualify anyone.

I'm only in science olympiad and math team-- and I'll have only been in them for 2 years. I've also been active in a church for nearly 3 years now, but that's all I've got really.

so I mean I really don't have that many ECs... and there isn't much else that interests me, to be honest. I don't know what to do, and I know packing on ECs in the last year of high school doesn't look good.

EC's really cannot be judged by numbers. I can only claim Model U.N. as a four year EC, some volunteer work during the summer, and some mentoring started in the spring of my junior year. Not very impressive at first glance, but I got early acceptances from Grinnell, Amherst, and Williams. It is really a matter of how much you actually care about what you do.

A lot of ECs won't get you in (personal experience). I have a ridiculous amount of ECs with a ridiculous amount of commitment (Editor-in-Chief of Newspaper, VP of Events in Science Olympiad, leads in plays...), and I got deferred ID, rejected from Yale, and waitlisted at WUSTL and UChic. I think that it had more to do with my grades than anything, but I'm saying that ECs won't necessarily push you over the edge. I also don't think that not having many ECs will hurt if you have good scores and grades because my friend, who does virtually nothing, got in ID with a substantial scholarship (No, I swear I'm not bitter...).

good to know I have a chance if I'm not doing everything there is to do...

With my one main EC being Model U.N., I even only had a board position for one year, and it wasn't even president or vice president. But I got an acceptance from Princeton today. :)

I have mediocre ECs...neither quality nor quantity. The only good thing I had was going to nationals for gymnastics...but then I quit after 10th grade, which probably looks bad. But I got in with merit scholarships. But I do have great SAT scores...

Yes, I'm a case in point.

what ECs did you have vinegar?

I was in charge of the students working for my school's Media Services (AV stuff). I managed and DJ'd middle school dances as part of this. I did freelance computer consulting for families of my school. I was in a leadership role in my yearbook class. I had some math competition awards from competitions I was mandated to participate in. I did a bunch of web-based programming in my free time and as an independent study. That's about all that could possibly qualify as ECs.

SAT score was very close to Rice's 2004 mean.

you guys that say you don't have many ECs have... a lot of ECs. seriously, I just have math team and science olympiad, and everything else is just boring so that's why I don't have anything else. hrmm... :

is 700m/640r/680w close to Rice's mean? except for reading, my psat score said I should be able to achieve higher scores, and I usually do on practice tests, but I tense up when I actually take the SAT so that's lame.
