Not your ordinary "chances" blog... please read =]

First off, I live in Pender county (look it up) it is prob. the most underprivileged county in all of NC =[ i mean it

Stats:
Rank: 3/200 (roughly 200)
SAT: 1260 (highest in my school)
ECs: President of NHS at my school, captain of varsity soccer team (we were ranked # 7 in state), world poverty awareness projects in Philippines, captain of math team, worked 22 hours a week at Chinese restaurant, 1st Team quiz bowl, like 150-200 hrs of community service, sooo many more

Essays were great, recs were amazing (was called 1 of top 5 students every taught by my 50 year old pre-calculus teacher)

Hook?- because i live in Pender county (even though i'm white) i think am considered an URM b/c i got to participate in all of the minority programs like project uplift and honors day.

Catch- I was deferred for early admissions but I ONLY had a 1650 overall SAT and an 1150 cr/m (a girl got in with that same score from my school last year). I eventually took SAT twice more and raised it to an 1850 overall and 1260 cr/m (highest for anyone accepted into UNC in its 5 year existence)

I'm taking all the APs (4)/ Honors (all the rest) avalible at my school

Midyear grades:

AP Lit and Comp- B (nobody got an A)
AP Calc AB- A (only A)
Spanish II- A
Digital Communications- A

Will a SAT increase of 200 points really increase my chances + my great midyear grades??? I mean i was deferred with 1150 cr/m so my new 1260 is actually average for UNC. The highest of anyone accepted from my school into UNC was 1240 and he was ranked #3 out of like 100 - he's doing great at UNC.

Do I have a chance? I actually am feeling a lot MORE confident with new SAT scores... Please reply to this =] btw everyone else in the top 10 of my class has less than 1200 SAT except for 1 person (#1 has like 1050, #2 has like 1100 & they are both applying to UNC and have like NO ECs)

I don't normally comment on chance threads, but I think I've played your team in quiz bowl before. I think you have a chance, and, yes, being from pender county and your new SAT score will help.

yeah you're in for sure.

nct3, what quiz bowl team are you from??? u live in pender county?

I sent you a private message

hey chillmandan, what do u think are my chances

Yea I was deferred in state. These are my stats

GPA: 3.8 UW, 4.7 Weighted

Class Rank: 10/485
14 AP classes
Minnesota State Debate tournament semifinalist
17 extracurriculars
Won 11 debate tournaments
Over 150 hours of community service
District tennis quarterfinalist
Captain of debate, and tennis team

AP economics: B(90.5)
AP Literature and Composition: B(86.8)
AP Computer Science:A(93.6)
Honors Civics and Econ: A(99.7)

How on earth did you get deferred? SAT?

Probably because he's oos though the stats are impressive

He said in-state.

I don't know why I was deferred, my SAT score was a little low, but I think my midyear grades are ok, and so hopefully I will get in.

Yeah, so my reading abilities are apparently non-existent when I'm tired. I read Minnesota and assumed OOS. It is kind of odd he got deferred IS then though I'd have to agree, it may be the SAT.

maybe he is from a competitive region (glad i live in the BOON-docks ha)

so... ummm my chances anyone?? lol

Pride surfer...I am from forsyth county

What kind of minority are you?

Id say you have a good chance in-state

If your URM, then your IN

thats the thing i'm white... but b/c i live in a strictly rural and poor area they consider me a minority for all of their programs... but i just don't know if they do for admissions purposes... i'd say that location does play a lot into decision since everyone accepted from my school in its 5 year existence has had a SAT score below UNC average...

highest for anyone accepted to UNC was a 1240 from my school.

White = Not a minority

I am Asian, and so I hope that it increases my chances of getting in after I was deferred.

Dude...fobby, how the hell did you get deferred? Is unc THAT competitive instate?

fobby1818, is there something you're not telling us? Stats like that normally wouldn't get you deferred in-state. They're crazy-good! A lot of people from my school got in with way lower stats. How were your recs and essays? On the plus side, I'd say you're pretty much a shoo-in now: )

well I was told that they deferred me because I got three c's last year, but they were all in AP classes. I had straight A's through sophmore year, and I was told that UNC wanted to make sure that the C's did not continue, and I didn't have any c's as midyear grades, and so I hope that my midyear grades will get me through. cat119, did you already get in? I feel like I am in, but I do not want to be overconfident and then end up being disappointed.
